LEAGUE MATCH 28th June 2003

UNITED LEAVE IT LATE

HELMSDALE UTD 1:0 DORNOCH CITY

Helmsdale United and Dornoch City meet at the Couper Park last Saturday and United got the win they needed to keep their league title hopes alive, but only just as they left it late to score the goal which could be very vital to them.

Dornoch who have had a few heavy defeats this season started the game determined not to give away any cheap goals. They did this very well by closing down United and playing some good football at times. However United eventually settled into the game and started to dominate by forcing the Dornoch defence into conceding several corners. United didn’t really capitalize from these corners and where short of ideas on how to break through what was a determined Dornoch defence.

United’s best effort on goal came midway through the first half when a 25 yard shot from Andrew Cairns rattled the Dornoch crossbar. Dornoch struggled to put the United defence under any sort of pressure. They did however have a couple of good goal scoring opportunities when they hit United on the break, but their forwards showed a lack of composure in front of goal.

United very nearly took the lead seconds before the halftime whistle when there was a frantic goalmouth scramble, but United couldn’t get the ball past Russell MacKenzie in the Dornoch goal who was having an inspired game.

The second half followed the same pattern of play as the first half, with United applying lots of pressure on the Dornoch goal and the Dornoch defenders putting in last ditch tackles and MacKenzie pulling off save after save to give United numerous corners.

As the game went on, United began to run out of ideas and they started to rely on long range shooting. John MacAulay had two decent efforts on goal, but MacKenzie saved well. In the 80th minute United’s Nicky Denoon came out of defence with the ball and he fired in an excellent 35-yard drive, which was once again saved superbly by the Dornoch keeper.

Just when it looked like Dornoch were going to hold out for the draw and ruin any chance United had of winning the league, United eventually got the goal they deserved. United’s winner came when in the 87th minute when they won yet another corner. From the corner Steven Henderson rose above the Dornoch defence and from six yards out he headed the ball over the goal line, but only just. The goal came with great relief to the United team and supporters as only a win would do to keep their league title hope alive.

LEAGUE MATCH 21st June 2003

UNITED SET UP EXCITING LEAGUE FINISH

LAIRG ROVERS 2:3 HELMSDALE UTD

Helmsdale United traveled away to Lairg last Saturday to play in what was a must win league game for both sides. United managed to pull off a 3-2 victory, which was tremendous considering they were nearly forced to start the game with ten men, however they managed to field eleven players but had no substitutes to rely on.

Both teams started the game brightly and the Lairg forward line looked very dangerous at times. However it was United which were carving out the better chances with MacPherson, Cowie and Whitehead coming close on several occasions.

The missed chances from United proved costly, as it was Lairg who took the lead midway through the first half. The goal came from a cross from the right hand side, which found the unmarked Kenny Fraser who finished well from ten yards out.

United responded immediately and almost equalized straight away when a MacPherson cross found Billy Cowie at the back post and his header which was heading for the top corner was brilliantly saved by Mark James Airey in the Lairg goal.

United did equalize in the 27th minute when William Cowie linked up well with Whitehead to create space for himself on the right wing. Cowie’s excellent cross found MacPherson in the six yard box, who stabbed the ball home to make the score 1-1.

United’s good play soon had them ahead in the 35th minute when a good team passing move was finished off by Jamie MacPherson. MacPherson twisted and turned inside the box to create a shooting opportunity, which he took full advantage off when he skillfully placed the ball in the bottom right hand corner of the net to score his second goal of the game.

Lairg tried in vain to get an equalizer before half time, but a strong United defence managed to keep the lively Lairg forwards out, to send United in at the break 2-1 ahead.

United started the second half strongly and soon started to create some half chances. The best of which being a Malcolm Cowie header and an excellent curling shoot, which went inches over the bar, from the veteran William Cowie.

Ten minutes into the second half Lairg had a good opportunity to equalise when the ball fell to Jamie Morrison, but his volley was superbly held by Steven Munro in the United goal. Shortly after that scare United extended their lead when a MacPherson header set up Billy Cowie who’s coolly lobbed finish from 15 yards out put United 3-1 up.

United then were content to defend their lead and they did that very well as Lairg struggled to create any real chances. However they did get a goal with four minutes remaining, when Calumn MacLeod smashed in a 25-yard volley which gave Munro in the United goal no chance.

That goal set up a nervous last few minutes for a tiring United team, but they held out for the 3-2 victory, which sees them climb level at the top of the table with the rest of the title contenders. United next play Dornoch who they have already beaten twice this season, but United will have to be at their best if they want the win that they will need.

LEAGUE MATCH 14th June 2003

EMBO 2:6 HELMSDALE UTD

UNITED BACK IN THE HUNT FOR LEAGUE TITLE

Helmsdale United travelled to Embo last Saturday for a must win league game, if they were to have any chance of holding onto their league title. They did just that in a very entertaining game which they won 6-2 to take all three points back to the Dale.

United were always on top in this game and applied pressure to the Embo defence by playing some good football. Embo however did have a couple of early opportunities to take the lead, but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Steven Munro in the United goal kept the game goalless.

United nearly took the lead in the tenth minute, when Billy Cowie broke through the Embo defence and his effort hit the post. Soon after United should have been ahead when a free kick was floated into the back post and Graham Grant missed a free header, which if he had connected with the ball he would have certainly given United the lead.

Eventually the pressure being applied to the Embo defence by United’s good play paid off and a Billy Cowie strike from the edge of the box found the bottom right hand corner of the net to make it 1-0 for United on the half hour mark.

United soon made it two nil when in the 37th minute Darren MacRae found space in the Embo penalty area, where he powered in an excellent finish from 10 yards out.

After the second goal Embo started to apply pressure on the United defence in order to get themselves back into the game, but United’s defence held strong and went in at the half time interval two goals up.

United started the second half brightly and wanted to kill off any remaining challenge Embo had to offer. United duly did this and scored two goals on the opening five minutes of the second half.

United’s third goal came after Cowie played in youngster Alexander Sutherland who showed great composure to finish from twelve yards out. United’s fourth goal came after a Steven Henderson header which was heading goal wards was deflected in by the head of an Embo defender.

After going four goals ahead United seemed to switch off and let Embo play some football. Embo soon punished United for this when after a good passing move, Embo forward Jones finished well to pull a goal back for Embo in the 55th minute.

That Embo goal seemed to spark new life back into the United team and they soon got themselves back into the game by creating numerous chances. United soon regained their four goal advantage when in the 60th minute United striker Billy Cowie broke clear of the Embo defence and he coolly rounded the Embo goalkeeper Craig MacKay to score his second and United’s fifth goal.

United’s sixth and final goal came in the 76th minute, when United substitute Paul Whitehead tapped the ball into the Embo goal from three yards out after and good passing move involving Cowie and Henderson.

Embo finished the scoring off when in the dying minutes of the game Jamie Shepherd scored what was only a late consolation goal. United could have had more goals in this game had their forwards shown more composure in their finishing. However United were very happy with the victory which sees them back in the hunt for the league title.

United next travel away to Lairg where they expect a tough game as Lairg are also going well in the League. (Lairg Rovers v Helmsdale United, Sat 21st June, KO 3pm)

PAUL CUP SEMI-FINAL June 11th,2003.

HELMSDALE UTD 0:1 GOLSPIE STAFFORD

Golspie Stafford won through to the Paul Cup final after they defeated Helmsdale United for the third successive time in a cup semi final at Helmsdale.

Both teams started the game strongly and were pushing for the important opening goal. Alexander Sutherland was looking years older than his young age as he was behind all the United moves and linking well with his midfield. At the other end, youngsters Shane Sutherland and Aaron Smith were just as impressive for Stafford, three youngsters with great talent. As the game flowed back and forth it was Stafford who made the all important breakthrough when Steven Doogan latched on to a through ball and laid the ball square for Darren Pullen to fire home from 16 yards.

Sutherland went close on a few occasions for Helmsdale, but they were finding it hard to break down a solid Golspie defence. Helmsdale came more into it in the second half and had two shouts for penalties turned down. Stafford were still dangerous and could have increased their lead but the game ended 1 - 0 to Golspie to send them into their third successive final.

AMATEUR CUP 3rd ROUND

LEAGUE MATCH  Fri 30th May 2003

BRORA WANDERERS 4:3 HELMSDALE UTD

ANOTHER SHOCK LEAGUE DEFEAT FOR UNITED

Helmsdale United's title hopes took a severe blow last Friday night when Brora Wanderers produced another surprise result to the season when they beat United 4-3 in a open and entertaining game.

Brora gained the lead when Robert MacDonald scored after latching onto a through ball and rounding United's stand in keeper Malcolm Cowie. The game was swinging from end to end with both sides creating chances, and it was Brora who went into a two goal lead when Gary MacLeod cut in from the left and fired home a beauty from sixteen yards out.

United responded immediately when forward Billy Cowie spotted the Brora keeper off his line and skilfully lobbed him straight from the kick off. United now back in the game pushed forward to try and get the equaliser, but it was Brora who went further ahead when Jimmy Sutherland collected a loose clearance and tapped in to give Brora a 3-1 half time lead.

United gave everything after the break and were soon back in the game when Martin Sutherland fired home in the 55th minute. United showed their battling qualities when the lively Sutherland notched his second to square things at three all.

However Brora weren't finished and Jimmy Sutherland shot home from 18 yards out to give Brora the win. The three points gained by Brora will mean a lot to their young team and especially since it came after a win against the reining Champions. Also the news of United's defeat will be welcomed by the teams at the top of the table as it means United are just about out of the title race.

STAFFORD CUP  Sat May 24th,2003.

HELMSDALE UTD 1:4 GOLSPIE STAFFORD

UNITED BEATEN AGAIN BY STAFF0RD

United were beaten for the second time in ten days by Stafford who now progress to their second final of the season.

United made the better start and were ahead after ten minutes when forward latched onto a Cairns downward header to slot the ball home from about eight yards out.

Stafford equalised when a cross field ball found Darren Pullen on the edge of the box where he coolly lobbed the advancing United keeper MacFaden. Stafford went 2-1 ahead shortly after when Sandy Grant headed home from 16 yards out.

Stafford killed of the United challenge when Pullen shot home from close in on the stroke of halftime to give Golspie a 3-1 lead.

The only second half scoring was a Colin Sutherland penalty for Stafford to give them a 4-1 win in a match which was spoilt by the wet conditions. Overall Stafford were comfortable winners and United will have to improve vastly if they want to beat Stafford this season.

HIGHLAND AMATEUR CUP 2nd Round   Sat 17th May 2003

UNITED EASE INTO NEXT ROUND

HELMSDALE UTD 4:0 DORNOCH CITY

Helmsdale United and Dornoch City meet at the Couper Park last Saturday in the 2nd round of the Highland Amateur Cup. United were never troubled in a match they were always in control off and ended up winning 4-0, but the winning margin should have been much greater.

United played the game at a high tempo and never let their opponents settle. It took only five minutes for United to open the scoring, when Billy Cowie placed a 25 yard free kick low down to the bottom right hand corner of the net.

United pressed hard for the second goal and created several chances. United forward MacPherson had several skilful runs and created numerous chances, but due to poor finishing from him and other United players, United couldn’t get the second goal, which their play deserved.

It was Dornoch who nearly got the next goal of the game, but United keeper Alan Bokas saved well from a header. The next piece of action, was an open goal miss from Billy Cowie. Cowie who was on the Dornoch goal line, where he tried to help in a Callum Cameron effort, but instead of heading the ball into the goal, he managed to clear the ball of the line much to the joy of Dornoch and amazement of the United support.

It took United until the 40th minute to get their second goal. It came after MacAulay split the defence with a pass and Alexander Sutherland excellently lobbed the Dornoch keeper from 25 yards out. Sutherland nearly put United three goals ahead, but he shot just wide after a great solo run.

With a two goal lead, United started the second half with a high intensity of play in order to get a third to kill off their opponents. After several corners and goal mouth scrambles United got their third goal in the 55th minute, when Steven Henderson slammed the ball home from eight yards out.

Mid-way through the second half United thought they were four goals up, when MacPherson headed home from close range, but his effort was disallowed due to him being in an offside position. Soon after this Alexander Sutherland nearly got his second goal but his effort hit the bar.

United finally got their fourth goal ten minutes before the final whistle. Graham Grant was gifted an opportunity to tap the ball in from six yards out, when the Dornoch keeper Fraser Bonthrone fumbled the ball.

Overall this was an easy victory for United, but Dornoch worked hard to keep the score line respectable. United’s name will go into the 3rd round draw for the Highland Amateur Cup, where their fans will be hoping for a decent away trip. Helmsdale United’s next game is this Saturday at home to Golspie in the semi-final of the Stafford Cup KO 3pm.

COUPER CUP  Wed 14th May 2003

UNITED OUT OF COUPER CUP

HELMSDALE UTD  1:3 GOLSPIE STAFFORD

Helmsdale United and Golspie Stafford clashed for the second time this season and just like the first encounter this was a tough game with little football being played. However there was goals and Stafford managed to progress to the Couper Cup Final with a 3-1 victory.

The game looked like it was going to be a midfield tussle, but Golspie were gifted the lead early on when United keeper Alan Bokas sliced a clearance straight into the path of Darren Pullen. Pullen took the ball forward and slammed it past Bokas and into the net to put Stafford one goal up.

The early goal seemed to compose the Golspie team as they tried to play some good football and United struggled to get into the game as they offered little in the way of attacking play. Golspie didn’t increase their lead in the first half, but they did have a goal disallowed on the stroke of half time, when Stafford striker Stephen MacLeod deflected in a shot from an offside position.

The pattern of play in the second half followed that of the first, with Golspie playing the better football, but both teams weren’t really creating any clear cut chances. However Golspie for the second time in the game had a Stephen MacLeod goal disallowed, but this time he wasn’t offside much to the annoyance of the Stafford players and relief for the United players.

Midway through the second half Golspie were given the chance to put the game beyond United, when they were awarded a penalty, when Walter MacKay appeared to be tripped just inside the area. Golspie defender Colin Sutherland converted the penalty and although it looked to be a harsh decision, United had no complaints at being only two goals down at this stage of the game.

The penalty seemed to awaken the United team as they enjoyed their best spell in the match. United pushed back the Stafford, defence who were content on defending their lead and with ten minutes remaining United set up a grandstand finish. Andrew Cairns came out off the United defence and played in a more advanced role and this paid off as he almost single handily played his way through the centre of the Stafford defence. Cairns finished well by slotting the ball past Scott Lannon in the Stafford goal to make the score 2-1 in Stafford's favour.

United tried hard to get the equaliser, but it wasn’t to be. It was Golspie midfielder Ian Innes who finished the game off, when in stoppage time he broke down the inside right channel and fired the ball past Bokas to win the game for Stafford and put them into the Couper Cup Final.

The teams will meet again in the Stafford Cup semi and it will surely be another hard fought game. United will have to play a lot better if they want to stop Golspie Stafford making it to another Cup Final.

STAFFORD CUP Quarter Final Sat May 10th,2003.

UNITED BEAT LOCHINVER

HELMSDALE UTD 4 : 1 LOCHINVER

Helmsdale United progressed to the next round of the Stafford Cup after a hard fought victory against their West Coast opponents Lochinver.

United started the game brightly and should have taken the lead in the opening minutes when there was several missed chances from Grant, MacAulay and Whitehead. Despite the shaky start from Lochinver, it was them who opened the scoring in the tenth minute. The goal came when Lochinver forward Jack Thoma twisted on the edge of the box and fired in a low shot past keeper Bokas into the United goal.

United tried hard to get the equaliser, however they were making defensive mistakes and it was Lochinver who nearly scored again, but Bokas saved well from a header. United forward Whitehead was causing problems for the Lochinver defence with some good runs, which created several chances for his strike partner Cowie.

The most controversial moment in the game came in the 20th minute when United were caught short at the back and Cairns brought down Alexander MacLeod on the halfway line to prevent the forward having a clear run on goal. Cairns was booked for the challenge and was lucky not to be sent off. Unfortunately for MacLeod he fell awkwardly and had to go off with a suspected broken collarbone.

Just when it looked like it wasn’t going to be United’s day they were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark when a Lochinver defender handled inside the box. Andrew Cairns dispatched the penalty despite a good effort from the Lochinver keeper Christopher Campbell to keep the ball out.

Shortly after getting the equaliser United nearly got a second when Alexander Sutherland’s superb strike hit the post. Lochinver also had a great opportunity to take a halftime lead, when after a mix up in the United defence Bokas’s clearance was charged down, but it went just wide of the post to put the teams in level at half time.

The second half saw both teams try hard to get the lead with Alexander Sutherland coming closest for United. Lochinver had a good effort from Kevin Taylor saved well by United keeper Alan Bokas.

United took the lead in the 55th minute when a high looping cross from Cowie was tipped by Campbell into the path of Paul Whitehead who volleyed home from close in. Minutes later United should have extended their lead after Tommy MacAulay skilfully back healed to set up Billy Cowie, but Cowie blasted the ball over the bar.

Soon after it was Cowie’s turn to set up MacAulay. Cowie’s cross from the right was coolly slotted home by the veteran mid-fielder MacAulay to put United 3-1 ahead.

United finished the scoring off when Paul Whitehead was set up by Sutherland. Whitehead shot from seven yards out and struck the post. The ball rebounded off the keeper and into the back off the net to give United a 4-1 victory and a place in the Stafford Cup semi-final.

LEAGUE MATCH 30th April 2003

HELMSDALE UTD 4:1 BRORA WANDERERS

UNITED DEFEAT WANDERERS

Helmsdale United entertained Brora Wanderers last Wednesday night in a rearranged league fixture due to Wanderers involvement in the Amateur Cup. United ran out 4-1 winners, but Brora made United work hard for their victory.

The first part of the game was mostly played out in the mid-field with no real goal mouth action to speak off. United did however start to dominate the game and pushed back a hard working Brora defence to create some goal chances. The best being a right footed shot by United mid-fielder Henderson, which was saved well by the Brora keeper Sammy Jackson.

The first goal of the game came midway through the first half after a good move involving the United strikers Cowie and Sweeting. Rubin Sweeting skilfully slotted the ball home from six yards out to finish of the move.

Minutes later United’s second goal came after a goalmouth scramble which saw Cowie miss an easy opportunity, but seconds later he made amends by heading the ball into the Brora goal.

With five minutes remaining of the half United were awarded a penalty after the Brora keeper blatantly pushed Billy Cowie when he was in firm control of the ball. Cowie converted the penalty to put United three goals up.

Brora Wanderers got themselves straight back into the game, when the United defence seemed to switch off and allow Brora to attack down the left-hand side. After a good move, Brora forward Robert MacDonald scored with a fine header to make the score 3-1 at half time.

The second half saw United content to defend their lead and let Brora come at them. Brora tried hard but couldn’t breakdown a strong United defence which was marshalled well by their veteran sweeper Cairns. Brora’s best chance too score came after a mistake from the Helmsdale keeper Bokas. He fumbled the ball, but managed to get back in time to clear the ball off the goal line.

The final goal of the game came on the 75th minute when MacAulay’s cross to the back post was headed in by Billy Cowie to complete his hat-trick. United perhaps should have had more goals with missed chances from Martin Sutherland and Richard Fox, but were happy with the win which sees them still in the race for the league title.

Other news for this game was a fine substitute appearance from striker Foxie, who is on loan to Helmsdale United from Spartack Belgrave. The United management will be looking to make the move permanent as Fox displayed some fine touches and great pieces of skill for the short time he was on the field.

Helmsdale United’s next game is this Saturday at home to Lochinver or Dornoch in the Stafford Cup KO 3pm.

LEAGUE MATCH 19th April 2003

GOLSPIE STAFFORD 0:0 HELMSDALE UTD

TITLE FAVOURITES DRAW

The big two of Sutherland football clashed last Saturday. This fixture in the past few seasons has been very much a league decider but not this season as they played out a boring 0-0 draw.

The game was mostly a mid-field battle with both teams looking more concerned about not losing the game rather than trying to win the game. Helmsdale could have nicked all three points when near the end of the game Billy Cowie was put clean through but he missed the opportunity to score. Golspie also had strong claims for a penalty kick in the first half when Grant appeared to clip the heals of Sutherland in the box but the referee waved play, much to the dismay of the Stafford support.

A draw was probably a fair result and it keeps the title race wide open between Lairg, Embo, Stafford and United.

LEAGUE MATCH 12th April 2003

DORNOCH CITY 0:8 HELMSDALE UTD

UNITED THRASH CITY

Helmsdale United made up for last week’s poor performance by beating Dornoch by eight goals to nil last Saturday afternoon.

United were always in control of this match and they put the Dornoch defence under pressure straight from the kick off. This early pressure soon paid off and Graham Cumming opened the scoring for United when he pounced on a mistake from the Dornoch keeper Bonthrone to roll the ball into the net with only five minutes gone.

United continued to create chances and their second came midway through the first half when Andrew Cairns powered in a header from a Billy Cowie corner kick. Minutes later it was Cowie’s turn to get on the score sheet when he finished well from a Sutherland cross to put United three up.

United were now in firm control of the match, but were forced into making a substitution on thirty minutes when Shaun MacRae had to come off injured. MacRae was replaced by Callum Cameron and he made an immediate impact on the match, with a strong run down the right wing and skilfully putting in a quality cross for Billy Cowie to score with a good back post header.

United finished off the first half scoring when Tommy MacAulay scored United's fifth goal with a brilliant lobbed finish after being played in by an excellent floated pass from John MacAulay.

Dornoch never troubled the United defence and their only real effort on goal came at the beginning of the second half. United keeper Alan Bokas tipped an excellent 25-yard free kick from Charlie Forbes over the bar.

United soon gained control of the game again after a brief spell of pressure from Dornoch when Cowie completed his hat-trick on fifty-five minutes when he taped into an open goal after a cross from Cameron.

Helmsdale’s seventh and Billy Cowie’s fourth came in the seventh minute when he finished coolly after being put clean through from a Bokas free kick. Cowie finished United’s scoring for the day with a superb free kick from 30 yards out.

United could have easily finished the game with more goals with Alexander Sutherland going close on a couple of occasions, Tommy MacAulay missed an open goal, a Barry Butcher free kick hit the bar and the veteran bionic man William Cowie missed a couple of half chances, although his general play was absolutely superb. However the United support and management were very happy with the 8-0 win and hope for a repeat performance when they travel to play Golspie Stafford, where as always they are expecting a tough game. (Golspie Stafford v Helmsdale United, Sat 19th, KO 3pm).

LEAGUE MATCH 5th April 2003

HELMSDALE UTD 1:2 EMBO

EMBO STUN CHAMPIONS

Helmsdale United opened their summer league campaign for this season with a shock home defeat to Embo last Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a very scrappy affair as both teams struggled to get into the game. The first real piece of match action came midway through the first half when United should have taken the lead. A long-range effort from Billy Cowie rattled Embo’s crossbar and the rebound fell to an unmarked United striker Graham Grant who shot over from ten yards out. After that missed chance from United, Embo began to get into the game more and the Embo forwards began to trouble a tiring United defence and create some half chances.

Five minutes before half-time United again nearly took the lead when a cross from the right hand side was headed low down to the bottom corner by Grant, but his effort was bravely saved by Embo keeper MacDonald, which saw him collide with the post.

It was then Embo’s turn to miss chances that should have seen them take the lead. After two goalmouth scrambles, United defenders Henderson and then Denoon had to clear the ball off the United goal line to put the teams in at the interval level at 0-0.

Again the standard off play in the second half was very poor to begin with, but fortunately for the watching crowd Embo began to play some football and create chances, which saw them hit United’s crossbar and Embo forward Jones miss several chances. United’s keeper Alan Bokas then had to make a good save low down to his left hand side after a strike from Embo’s MacDonald.

The pressure from Embo eventually paid off, when they took the lead fifteen minutes into the second half after James MacGilvary appeared to mishit a cross from the right to put the ball past Bokas and into the goal at the near post.

United then made a substitution after going behind to try and get themselves back into the game, with Shaun MacRae coming on to replace Paul Whitehead. As United pushed for the equaliser, Embo hit United on the break and George Jones, who caused United problems all day, slotted the ball into the net with a good finish to give Embo a two goal lead with twenty minutes remaining.

Embo now sat back to defend their lead and were content on playing a counter attacking game, as United pressed hard to get a goal. Helmsdale struggled to create any good opportunities and it was only in the last minute of the match that United managed to get past a well-organised Embo defence. United’s goal was scored by substitute MacRae who finished well after good a good passing move involving Cairns, Cowie and Reid who supplied the defence splitting pass to put MacRae in the clear.

The overall standard of play from both teams was poor and Embo probably just about deserved the victory. As for United they will have to improve a great deal on this performance if they want to hold onto their League Title.

SEASON 2002

LEAGUE MATCH 15th July 2002

HELMSDALE UTD 4:3 GOLSPIE STAFFORD

Helmsdale United retained the The Northern Times league championship after an entertaining 4-3 victory over their old adversaries Golspie Stafford.

United went into the game requiring only one point for the Championship but knew that they would have to be at their best to get the point from Stafford, and eventually finished the season with a magnificent 100% record.

The game’s first real chance fell to Walter Mackay who headed wide from a Darren Pullen corner. Soon after United had their first goal scoring opportunity when Billy Cowie made a darting run down the left and his low cross was cleared just before the inrushing Martin Sutherland could make contact. United were starting to play some good football and after a good passing movement Graham Grant shot just over. Stafford began to come more into the the game as the had to push for the opener to give them the victory that they required and on the half hour a Pullen shot was deflected wide for a corner. United were now under pressure and the opener for Stafford came in the 35 minute after good work down the left by Mackay, his cut back was hammered home by Scott Lannon to give Golspie the lead.

Helmsdale went straight up the park and retaliated with a Jason Gunn header which Austin Mackay tipped onto the bar and the rebound was cleared for a corner. A Stuart Mackenzie cross was met by the head of Graham Grant but Mackay held comfortable. United were now pushing for the equaliser and Cowie beat the keeper to the ball but Stafford cleared the danger. On the stroke of half time Walter Mackay produced a brilliant piece of work to turn his marker and set up Ian Innes to increase the Stafford lead and what looked like a 2-0 half time lead. In first half injury time United were given a life line when referee MacLelland pointed to the spot for hand ball, and Kevin Macleod stepped up confidently and scored, but there was still time for Stafford's Darren Pullen to fire a free kick just over from 25 yards. Stafford went in at half-time the happier of the two teams with a 2-1 score line in their favour.

The second half saw Helmsdale come out of the traps very quickly as they had to get something out of the game to ensure they kept their league title and a Martin Sutherland shot was saved by Mackay. Then a Grant ball over the top saw Sutherland cut in from the right but his well hit shot was brilliantly turned over by Mackay. After 55 minutes a corner caused havoc in the Stafford defence and when the ball came out to Macleod he fired home from 16 yards to level the score line at 2-2. Four minutes later United nearly took the lead when the hard working Sutherland got a long ball on the right and cut back for Steven Henderson to shoot, but again Mackay saved well. On 63 minutes United took the lead when a perfect chipped ball by Cowie picked out Grant and his well hit shot flew into the net. Stafford were now behind for the first time in the game due to spirited comeback by united, soon retaliated and Pullen went clear of the united defence but he couldn’t beat Alan Bokas who saved well.

Then the game saw two red cards in the 71st minute when John Smith (Stafford) was sent off for a tackle from behind and Martin Sutherland (United) for retaliation. With more space on the park chances were coming for both teams, but United's Cowie was first to take advantage of the free space when he got on the end of a through ball and went slightly wide right and fired a great shot across Mackay into the bottom corner for a 4-2 lead to United. Stafford were still full of fight and within a minute of the restart Pullen again found himself clear but the outstanding Bokas saved. With ten minutes left Walter Mackay gave Stafford a fighting chance when after some great footwork he beat a couple of defenders and fired across Bokas and scored in of the post. Chances came and went at both ends but the Helmsdale United defence managed to hold out to secure the 4-3 win which gave them the league title and the 100% league record which they so badly wanted after recent poor cup performances.

United's vice captain Graham Grant accepted the league championship trophy on behalf of normal captain Andrew Cairns who could not be at the game due to a hospital appointment.

PAUL CUP FINAL  13th July 2002 @ Lairg.

EMBO 2:1 HELMSDALE UNITED

Embo won the Paul Cup last Saturday after winning 2-1 in a very entertaining game against Helmsdale United at Lairg. Embo were making their second final appearance of the season and after losing the Stafford cup to Golspie Stafford and were in no mood to become second best again.

The game kicked off in sunshine, and with temperatures in the high seventy’s it was going to be hard for the players to keep a high tempo. Both teams found chances hard to come by in the early exchanges. Embo were first to show but James MacGilvary's header went just wide, then MacGilvary went clear after robbing the Helmsdale defence of the ball, although Alan Bokas got a hand to the ball he couldn’t keep it out and Embo had the lead. The game was being fiercely fought in midfield, and both keepers were kept busy fielding long range shots and crosses, Embo were through again but Bokas made a great save at the feet of Colin Fraser. United had a chance to equalize when Billy Cowie crossed for Drew Smith but he never made good contact and Fraser Bonthrone saved easily, just as the ref was to blow for half time Smith raced clear of the solid Embo defence and fired home to give Helmsdale United a lift for the second half.

United came out with a bit more conviction in the second half and had a great chance but John Sutherland fired wide from seven yards, then things got worse for the striker when he headed over when it looked easier to score. Embo took full advantage from this and when MacGilvary broke through on the right he fired low under the diving Bokas. Helmsdale now started to take chances and push up but they couldn’t leave the dangerous MacGilvary and Fraser unmarked. The last quarter saw United player Malcolm Cowie receive a red card for a challenge with Embo keeper Bonthrone. Even with the ten men Helmsdale keep pushing but found the Embo defence in top form, eventually referee Matt MacLelland blow for full time and this sparked huge celebrations in the Embo camp.

This was a tremendous victory for Embo and well deserved for the hard work, that officials, management and team have put in over the last few years since returning to the East Coast league. The Sutherland A.F.A would like to thank the Grange bar Lairg for generously sponsoring the Cup, and to Lairg Rovers for their hospitality on the day. The man of the match was James MacGilvary , the Embo man of the mach was Jamie Sheperd sponsored by ex Embo man Willie Mackay.

Both teams started very cautious, and chances were few and far between, the first real shot was from Alex Hamilton who after a neat passing move, was set up but Bokas in the Helmsdale goal made a good block, and from his throw out United went on the attack and Billy Cowie had a shot saved by Bonthrone in the Embo goal. Hamilton again had a good opportunity when he fired wide from 10 yards after a cut back from James MacGilvary. Chances were coming at both ends now, but the keepers weren’t really troubled. Alexander Sutherland tried his luck with a volley but Bonthrone saved comfortably Paul Whitehead shot wide for United as did Jamie Sheperd for Embo. After a half hour Bonthrone made his first real save low down to right from a Cowie shot. Whitehead tried his luck again but his shot was just off target, Then Helmsdale United went one up, Jason Gunn played a through ball Sutherland flicked it on and Cowie ran through to slot the ball home for the opener. Embo retaliated immediately and with MacGilvary clean through Bokas made an excellent stop at his feet. Then just before half time Embo got their reward after MacGilvary's shot cannoned back off the bar Hamilton was on hand to net from 12 yards to level things.

At the start of the second half, Bokas again made a save and United went up the park and Sutherland shot just wide. Hamilton went clean through on goal but Bokas again brought off a great save to his left to deny the Embo midfielder.  Cowie went close when a Kevin Macleod free kick eluded everybody and found Cowie at an Angle to goal but his shot went over. On the hour mark United had the best chance of the half so far when a Martin Sutherland cross went wide to A. Sutherland his flick back over the keeper landed at Whitehead he beat one man but Shaun Macdonald made the saving block on the goal line. Both sides kept making and missing chances but the game ended 1-1, so it went to penalties.

Embo were first up and Lee MacAffaer sent the ball over the bar. Then Billy Cowie stepped up and Bonthrone save his penalty. Embo scored their next two through Jamie Sheperd and David Mackay, as did United through Kevin Macleod and Martin Sutherland, then Jamie Stewart scored to put Embo 3-2 ahead, Stuart Mackenzie stepped up and Bonthrone again pulled of a save to leave Billy MacRae to score with the last penalty to seal a Pattison cup final place for Embo.

Golspie Stafford also made their third final of the season after a 7-3 win away to Lairg Rovers. The first half of the game only had one goal scored by Stafford’s Ian Sutherland although there was chances created. The second half exploded into action and after only two minutes Rovers had leveled things, when Neil Macdonald equalized, this saw Golspie have a four goal burst in seven minutes to effetely kill off the tie. Sandy Grant showed the way with a twenty-five drive and this was followed up with goals from Walter Mackay, Kevin MacAskill and Scott Lannon to give Stafford a 5-1 lead after only ten minutes of the second half. Mackay got his second of the game and Liam Sutherland finished of the rout, before Jamie Morrison pulled back two goals from the penalty spot.

HELMSDALE UTD 5:2 EMBO

In the league Helmsdale United beat Embo 5-2 to go six points clear at the top, and keep their 100% league record.

Embo fielded an under strength team as they were resting players for their Highland Amateur game.

They paid the price for this in the first half as United raced to a four goal lead, It took only ten minutes for Helmsdale to break the deadlock, when Billy Cowie fired home from a free kick, United were soon two nil ahead when Cowie scored with a near identical free kick. Cowie got his hat trick when he turned a right wing cross home from six yards, and added a fourth when Tommy MacAulay beat the offside trap and squared to Cowie who had a tap in.

HIGHLAND AMATEUR CUP   Sat 18th May 2002

The Highland Amateur Cup saw a big 2nd round shock when the much fancied Helmsdale United fell at the hands of Caithness second division side Ashes. Lairg Rovers also went down to last years champions Wick Thistle, but on a brighter note Golspie Stafford went through beating Kinlochbervie 10-0 and there was also good wins for Dornoch City and Embo.

ASHES 2:1 HELMSDALE UTD

Helmsdale United went into the game as much fancied favourites to return home with a place in the third round secured, but their hosts had other ideas and went on to complete a memorable victory.

Helmsdale started well and chances but it was obvious that it was going to one of those days as everything they hit towards goal always seemed to find an Ashes player in the right position on the goal line to clear. Ashes took the lead after they took an early free kick and as it got played into the box United only cleared to the edge of the area, for an Ashes attacker to shoot home from 18 yards. Then the unthinkable happened Helmsdale went two down the Ashes winger sent an unstoppable volley into the top corner to send the home in at the break 2-0 ahead. The second half saw Helmsdale push forward but their luck was not in on the day and all the muster was solitary Billy Cowie effort. The Helmsdale United c/o managers Hector Mackay and Willie Cowie both agreed that it was not one off Helmsdale’s best days and a lot of credit must be given to Ashes for the way they doggedly held on to secure a place in the third round.

COUPER CUP  14th May 2002

LAIRG ROVERS 3:2 HELMSDALE UTD

Last Tuesday Lairg Rovers made it through to the final of Couper Cup after an entertaining game with Helmsdale United. Lairg were involved in their third successive 3-2 game having lost the last two they eventually won this one. Both teams started well and chances came at both ends, but the best chance fell to United’s Billy Cowie, who’s penalty kick was saved by Mark Airey in the Rovers goal. With the game so open it was a surprise that the first goal came from a set piece, with a perfectly flighted Graig Caunter free kick Kenny Fraser got his head to it first and found the net. Then just before the break another Caunter cross caused havoc in the visitors defence and when the ball fell to Neil Macdonald his shot went in of the crossbar to give Lairg a 2-0 half time lead. Jamie Morrison had the perfect chance to increase the lead, but Alan Bokas in the Helmsdale goal acrobatically saved his penalty kick, this boosted Helmsdale and they pushed their hosts back and soon reduced the leeway when Malcolm Cowie hammered home a volley from 18 yards. The game was in the last minute when it saw it’s next goal, Malcolm Cowie again found space and his curling shot went in of the post to level things up. With everybody looking for penalty kicks Rovers broke straight from the kick off and a Kenny Fraser cross picked out the lethal Jamie Morrison at the back post and his vicious volley went in of the post to send Lairg into a repeat of last seasons Couper Cup final against Golspie Stafford.

STAFFORD CUP 9th May 2002

HELMSDALE UTD 3:1 BETTYHILL

Helmsdale United played Bettyhill for the second year running in Helmsdale in the Stafford Cup, the outcome was the same with a victory for the East coast side by three goals to one.

Bettyhill started the game confidently and looked the more likely to score. As the game wore Helmsdale started to make chances but failed to capitalise, they paid for this when Bettyhill took the lead midway through the half, with a well taken goal, the visitors were well worth their goal lead at half time. The second was only ten minutes old when youngster Robert Macdonald raced through on the Brian Mackay in the Bettyhill goal to slot the ball past for the equalizer, Then their was a bit of controversy about United’s second goal, when Mackay dropped the ball after injuring his finger but the ball was still in play and Sandy Macaulay nipped in to put Helmsdale 2-1 ahead. Then chances came and went at both ends before Graham Grant rose above the Bettyhill defence and head home from a corner kick, to seal a excellent second half fight back for the home team.

Helmsdale United now have a difficult trip away to Golspie Stafford in the next round.

The Quarter finals of the Stafford Cup has produced two East Coast tie’s with Lairg Rovers v Embo and Golspie Stafford v Helmsdale United, which will put two East coast sides in the semi-finals, and Dornoch city have a long away trip to Kinlochbervie.

As the game wore it was the ten men of Lairg who had the best chances as the battled bravely to save a point, But there was no more scoring and the game ended 3-2 to Helmsdale United.

This was a game of two half’s with Helmsdale having the best off the first and Lairg having the best chances in the second, as the ten men fought to the last whistle.
