The condition of the ruins of St Kentigern’s Church gives the Society cause for concern. Councillor Mary McNeil has been active in helping the Society and informed the Council about the parlous state of the twelfth century south doorway which is coming away from the nave wall. A set of barriers was placed there by the Council to prevent access but unfortunately they have been employed by the vandals to clamber up on the roofs of several chapels including the William Smellie Chapel.
The weather too has not been very kind to St Kentigern’s – the Lockhart Chapel has lost a number of slates. Unfortunately, the loss of these slates means that the roof will deteriorate fairly quickly. In essence, the problems facing the ruins of St Kentigern’s are serious and will cost a great deal of money to fix. It is hoped that the money can be found somewhere as St Kentigern’s has so many important historic connections. Maybe Visit Scotland might be its saviour as certainly it needs one now.
