The LADAS Library

The Lanark & District Archaeological Society Library is housed within the Public Library at Lindsay Institute, 16 Hope St., Lanark, ML11 7LZ. Opening hours are 9.30am - 7.30pm Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and 9.30am - 5.00pm on Wed., Sat.

The contents extend to 1,000 volumes approx. and are principally archaeological and historical material, especially relating to Scotland and the local Clydesdale area. The library is being regularly added to and includes annual volumes of The Proceedings of The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland from the 1870's to the present day.

Access to the collection is permitted for Society members by consulting Scott Main, Society Librarian at Lanark Library on 01555 661144. An appointment is necessary as the collection is housed in an office within the building, although it is intended to make the collection as accessible as we can. The borrowing allowance is eight volumes for a maximum of 4 weeks (renewable in person or by phone). Issuing and discharge of material will be undertaken by Mr. Main.

The principal purposes of the library are twofold

  1. To hold material which sets the work of The Society in context i.e. helps to interpret the discoveries of the Society, and also complement in reading material the broad subject areas covered in lecture programs of The Society
  2. To hold an archive of published material that relates to archaeological research in Clydesdale. A subsidiary purpose is to hold a general library resource as reading material concerning the past for the benefit of the membership.
