Forthcoming Events Notice to be placed in the paper re the Selkirk trip plus posters. Depart 9.00 a.m from Lanark Library for Selkirk, Aikwood, Philiphaugh and Melrose. Ed to try and get in contact with the owner of the site at Ravenstruther. Archaeological Event - Lawrence Keppie provisionally agreed, Tam Ward contacted. Conference of Independent Archaeologists - Malcolm and Ed booked. Orkney visit - probably school holidays to include Monday if going out October 12th Graham Warren to confirm by end of August if he could manage on January 14th and there had been no news from Bob Will. Report on Society of Antiquaries Conference given at this point by Alan Paton; the Conference included a talk on Carmichael Mill by Lorna Sharpe. Roles and Responsibilities Ed - Newsletter - projected publication date is August. Fieldwalking at the Teaths not very successful as the ground was very uneven. Ed talked about the discoveries at the Wide Close. Castledykes discussion ongoing. Awaiting a reply about insurance from ALVO Had a request for information about some of the fieldwalking finds made in 2000. Ed reported that Steven Scott had been in touch and that there was a wide variety of bones including human as well as both domestic and wild animals. Lottery application discussed and it was revealed by Alan that a decent G.P.S system could be had for £169.02. It was also agreed that a commercial version of Photoshop should be applied for costing £600 as well as a portable 12v Printer costing about £100. Ed mentioned that the Resistivity equipment would now cost £750 but that the equipment would come assembled.. Ann - Said that Bellefield Sanatorium should be looked at before it was destroyed by the vandals. Ann was to contact Central Scotland Trust about the planting of trees on the Lang Whang. Ann also reported that the Tolbooth would be available on 16/09/01. Ann was going to contact the Elphinstone and that matter was on going. A report from Scott indicated that £200 had been sent to Tam for dating . There was no financial comment. Alan - Reported that David Jones from Edinburgh was willing to train Society members on the use of resistivity equipment. He also mentioned that he had 100 bamboo markers as well as purchasing trowels and barrier gloves. General points Ed had received a letter from Andrew Selkirk about the Valetta Convention and the dangers posed to amateur archaeologists. It was decided to support the stand taken by Current Archaeology and several letters were signed . It was also decided to approach Jimmy Hood and Karen Gillon about the matter. Steven Scott to be taken for a meal for doing the work on the bones as well as being paid his expenses. Ed mentioned that Malcolm had offered the Society a number of volumes of the Society of Antiquaries' Proceedings. It was decided to approach Shire with a view to getting a trade catalogue. Alan reported that Dr Morrison might be giving his collection of books to the Society so members were asked to consider the implications of this. Alan reported that Historic Scotland were doing a survey of the decay of carved stones. Ed was to have alook at what was happening in the region of Winston Barracks. Charlie wondered what was happening re Oxfam. David Hill said that it was worth having a look at the old kennels connected with the Lee Estate. Computer training was discussed and it was thought that the library was the best place to acquire that sort of training. Meeting closed at 9.45 p.m. Next meeting Wednesday July 11th.
