How can we encourage other members to participate in giving talks? CHRISTMAS MEAL Those present enjoyed this. We will review whether to change this to a date in November, and perhaps make it a ticket only evening, due to difficulties this year with members turning up on the night without booking. Ann wishes to minute that if we use a venue where it is necessary to order the food before the event that she will not take responsibility for any part of the booking. NEW YEAR OUTING Twenty-three people took part in the outing to the Peebles/Manor Valley area on 2nd. January, and enjoyed Ed’s talk at Manor Kirk and other sites along the Manor Valley, including The Black Dwarf’s Cottage. The venue for lunch was Castle Venlaw Hotel. The day ended with a town walk in Peebles. Ed will write to the farmer at Manor Head to thank him for allowing us to see the Bastille House. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Graeme Warren Lanark Library, Monday 14th January. Alan will host the meal for Graeme. DANTE ALIGHIERI Ed thinks that the room in the ALVO premises is too small for the joint meeting in February. It is too late to change this now, but we can review after the meeting and make any necessary changes for future meetings. FEBRUARY LECTURE Our February talk will be in Biggar. Fraser Hunter. Excavations at Birnie, near Elgin. APRIL OUTING Sandy to be contacted to see if there is any point in delaying this trip until the following weekend. C.I.A. 2 DAY EVENT at NEW LANARK The Independent Archaeologist – An Endangered Species. Ed will develop framework with Andrew and will contact folks to do talks. Suggestions for the Sunday were a.Tour of our industrial archaeology. b.Monuments of South Lanarkshire. c.Kittochside We will probably favour Kittochside. Suggested price of ticket for the event is £17.00. Grant from ALVO for the cost of accommodation, or will C.I.A. underwrite this? Ed will visit Tourist Office for advice on accommodation for visitors. The event will be advertised in all appropriate magazines and newsletters, and at the C.S.A. AGM in Dundee on 23.02.02. Ian and Ed to send out same press release. CHANGE OF SPEAKER Alan Leslie will give the talk on Inveresk on 08.04.02 ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES NEWSLETTER. Ed hopes to have this done by next week. Mention of the change of speaker for the April lecture to be included. FIELDWALKING. A new site on the Lang Whang has been identified. The site is 3.75 miles from Carnwath, on the right, opposite Dykefoot Farm. Ian would like to see all the registration forms from last year completed before we embark on any new projects. Scott has offered to complete forms if Ed supplies the information. TREASURE TROVE. We are now obligated to do a full Archaeological Survey. Ed will arrange a time with Malcolm to clear this. SAFETY. Gloves for field walking have been purchased. Field walking equipment is ready to go. MUSEUM FORUM. Jack has information on courses available on Working with flat textiles. Introduction to Archives and Education in Museums. He can access a catalogue offering 50% discount on preservation equipment. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT. No change. GPS Scott required to submit accounts and paperwork to secure the grant for £200.00 Ed has been investigating and found that Jessops might be a suitable source for purchasing. Ian will investigate some outlets in London. BRIDGES SURVEY. No change. FINANCES. Bank £1964.08. Cash as before. IAN MORRISON’S LIBRARY The society has been named in his will as The Administrator for his collection. Help required to paint garage to accommodate books to enable work to continue. Scott will receive books at Lanark Library and list them before they are moved to New Lanark. Working party for Admin. Alan and Scott. A.O.C.B. Venue for committee meetings to be reviewed at next meeting. Scott will update a list of any additions to society library, and the membership will be notified of any additions in the newsletter. Alan mentioned that he had spoken with Graeme Warren. He has requested a copy of our programme in poster scale for students. He also enquired if we would be prepared to work with students on projects. The Centre for Continued Education at Edinburgh is offering accredited courses, and is inviting suggestions for subjects that we might like to take part in.
