This was the annual Colonel Cranstoun Memorial Lecture, held jointly with the Dante Aligheri Society. The speaker was Dr Bill Wilkie, whose subject was the life of people in ancient Rome. In a diverse and comprehensive lecture Dr Wilkie address life in all strata of Roman society, from the places of the Emperors to the tenement housing of the working classes. The teachers in the audience were amused to learn that teachers were often slaves, their only consolation was that they could usually fetch a higher price than a labourer. Dr Wilkie illustrated his talk with a diverse variety of slides from all the corners of the empire, including Greece and Britain. This sparked much interest from the audience who asked a number of questions about the wonders of Roman engineering.
