Kittochside Museum of Rural Life

Duncan Dornan 8 October 2001

For the second lecture of the session members of Lanark and District Archaeological Society were given an account of Kittochside Museum of Rural Life by its curator Duncan Dornan. Duncan is a former pupil of our Secretary, Ed Archer, and coming from a farming background and is exceptionally knowledgeable on the subject. It was explained that a number of years ago there used to be a Scottish countryside museum at Ingliston. Since then things have moved on thanks to a joint project undertaken by the National Trust for Scotland and the National Museums of Scotland. This was only possible in the first instance because of the generosity of the Reid family who donated their farm to the nation. The Reid's have been farming the lands of Kittochside since the late 16th century but there were no members of the family to carry on the great tradition of farming at Kittochside and so Mrs Reid decided to make her donation in 1992. Since that date both the National Trust and the National Museums of Scotland have worked exceptionally hard to build a brand new museum and to renovate the Reids' farmhouse.
