On Monday, 9th December, members and friends attended the members' night at the Elpthinstone Hotel in Biggar.
The first speaker was John Clark who illustrated his talk on the history of the signal box with a number of slides. John discussed many of the features of the various boxes which were once essentail in the running of the railway.
The next talk was given by Ian Borthwick on the archaeological heritage of Jersey. Ian explain how the Channel Islands had not been islands for much of pre-history, but had been seperated from mainland France during Mesolithic times. Ian details many of the sites, mainly Neoltihic graves and monuments, that he had visited over the last 2 summers.
There was then a break for tea and sandwiches after which Ed Archer gave an account of his recent visit to Belgium using the Society's laptop computer and the new LCD projector. The ability of this system was further illustrated by a presentation on the history of the Shetland sheep.
The audience asked several questions of the speakers before Ed Archer proposed a final vote of thanks to all who had participated.
