Athens and its place in History

Scott Main November 15th 1999

Scott's lecture was about the position of Athens in History. He introduced the lecture by a quick slide illustrated tour of the buildings of Glasgow and Lanark, demonstrating the influence of Greek architecture on the work of the Victorians. This was followed in turn by a masterful exposee of the Classical buildings in Athens itself beginning with the Acropolis and ending with the tower of the Winds. Members were really impressed by the quality of slides of the buildings and the sculptures which formed the last part of Scott's talk. The talk provoked plenty of discussion especially on the very topical subject of whether the Elgin marbles should be returned to Greece - some members felt that they should be returned as it was " cultural imperialism " to hang on to them, others felt that the Greeks were incapable of looking after them properly. Sandy Gilchrist gave the vote of thanks and was fulsome in his praise of Scott's lecture which was well appreciated.
