Weekend Expeditions

Summer 1999

In August the Society undertook a tour of the Inverness area. In a very busy weekend the group saw at least 17 historic sites or buildings. The first port of call was the neolithic burial mounds at Clava Cairns.

We then went on to visit the Culloden battle field and Fort George. We then went back to earlier times by visiting Beauly Abbey before heading towards the Nigg area were we saw a number of standing stones. We also visited the excellent museum in Dingwall before ending the days exploration at Fortrose cathedral.

Huntly Castle

On the Sunday the party again headed east and visited Duffus Castle and Spynie Palace on the way to Elgin where we had lunch. After dining we visited Elgin Cathedral before we started on our journey south. Our visit to Huntly Castle (left) was cut short due to torrential rain, but the weather improved which allowed us to enjoy Kildrummy and Glenbuchat castles in better weather.

In September the Society undertook another weekend visit, this time to the Isle of Bute. The visit was less energetic, but no less enjoyable than the earlier excursion. Over the weekend we visited Mount Stewart House, Rothesay Castle and St Blane's chapel.
