The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Lanark

Established in 1987 by Richard Paterson, with a generous donation from the late William Eagle Hall, the group has grown steadily together with the number of volunteer leaders and committee.

We are now one of the largest groups in Lanarkshire. The scheme is not competitive and anyone with the necessary perseverance, enterprise and effort can gain an Award. Young people are encouraged to choose activities, which suit their particular interests and talents. For adults the scheme provides an opportunity to help by sharing their skills and experience.

The Awards:-

To achieve each award four sections must be completed:

Service - Participants choose one form of service and undertake training and give practical service to others. e.g. Radio Law, Stanmore House, Police or Fire Service.

Expedition - To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery. All the participants are trained by our qualified voluntary leaders and undertake practice journeys before completing the qualifying journey.

Skills - To encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and practical skills. Participants choose from a wide range of activities and practise them for 6, 12, or 18 months depending on the award. e.g. Cooking, Music, Panto, Drama, Pottery etc.

Physical Recreation - To encourage participation in physical activities. Participants are required to take part in some form of physical recreation and achieve progress. e.g. Swimming, Dancing, Orienteering etc.

Meetings are held in the YMCA in Lanark, usually on a Sunday evening, from October to June. Expeditions take place over the summer months. If you feel you would like to participate or help with the award scheme contact Richard Paterson (01555 661170) or Mrs Audrey Mackie (01555 664849 or email )
