The Lanimer Committee is the principal body responsible for organising Lanark's famous June celebrations. A 155 strong group meet during the first half of the year to plan the town's Showcase Event. Various sub-committees run different aspects such as the colourful and spectacular procession or the entertainment at the Town's Castlebank Park. Membership of the Lanimer committee is open on proposal by two serving members of four years standing.
Their primary function is to uphold and perpetuate the historic traditions of the Lanimers, an event which dates back, in one form or another, to the granting of Lanark's Royal Charter circa. 1140.
Perhaps the most important function of the Committee is that of fund-raising as costs continually rise year by year. The two principal financial forms of support are firstly, the grant received and services supplied from the local authority, South Lanarkshire Council. This is greatly appreciated. Secondly from the Lanimer Silver Club monthly draw, which continues to receive strong support from local residents, also Lanarkians living outwith the Royal Burgh, as lists of winning addresses continuously show.
Planning for the Lanimers starts behind the scenes at least a year in advance, although the official Lanimer countdown begins in February when a group of representatives from the Lanimer Committee, the Guildry, the Lord Cornets Club, the Community Council and the two local Councillors, meet to elect the Lord Cornet or Standard Bearer.
Later the Chairman with the two joint procession Conveners choose the lady to crown the Lanimer Queen. Finally the Chairman chooses the lady to sash the Lord Cornet.
After the Lord Cornet has been chosen, the Secretary requests the head teachers of the six local schools to elect members of Court, including the Lanimer Queen, according to a rota prepared by the Lanimer Committee.
