Lanark Women's Rural Institute was started in 1986 by a group of Lanark ladies who had been attending another W.R.I. nearby and suggested the possibility of starting an Institute in Lanark.
After consultation with the Lanarkshire Federation of Women's Institutes a public meeting was held in the E.U. Church Hall. Nearly 90 ladies attended this meeting. There being no objections from other organisations in the town, the Lanark Institute was constituted, a Committee formed and the first meeting held in September 1986.
A membership of around 50 meet in Christ Church Hall, Hope Street, on the first Thursday of each month from September to April at 7.30pm.
The aims of the W.R.I. are to provide, to the highest standards, educational, vocational, recreational, and social opportunities for those who live and work in the country or are interested in country life.
