Horsell Tower

Introduction

Horsell is one of two churches within the borough of Woking (the other being St. Peter's, Old Woking) which possess tower bells hung for ringing. Ringing takes place regularly on practice nights and for Sunday services, and visitors are always welcome to join us at these times. However, it is advisable for visitors to confirm ringing arrangements. Horsell Church

The Tower and Bells

The tower is of 14th century origin and was restored in 1884 and 1932. In 1553 it was recorded in an inventory that there were "3 belles in the steple", but by 1741 there were four. These four were replaced by six new ones by Robert Catlin of Holborn and rung for the first time on December 14th, 1741. The 2nd and 5th were recast by John Taylor and Co. in 1886, and the tenor was recast by Warner and Sons in 1912. The treble, 3 and 4 are original bells.

The tower is affiliated to the Guildford Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers

Peals: A total of 20 peals for the Guildford Diocesan Guild have been rung in the tower. The last one was rung on 11th May 2003. The Felstead Peal Records provide a summary of peals rung in the tower.

Learning to Ring

New learners are always welcome. We have ringers of all ages amongst our members, and there is no age limit - just a need to be big enough to handle a bell. New learners normally come to one of our practices to meet our ringers and see what is involved, and this is then followed by a few individual sessions with a silenced bell. Once sufficient bell control has been achieved then a learner joins our normal practices.

We also welcome those who have learned to ring in the past and who would like to resume.
