					What we cost
		The national initiatives of the past twenty years haveled to improvements in pupil attainment and in the management of schools. However, we all know that sustained and continuous improvement is dependant on improvements in the quality of teaching. When I work with newly qualified teachers I always start by saying that I wish I could return to the class of children I first taught back in the 1960's and apologise profusely! Good teachers are not born - they are created. They learn to develop and refine their skills, often by observing and working with more experienced colleagues. School Improvement from the Inside is designed to allow for an indepth review of the quality of teaching and learning and the development of a programme of support and training. This will use in the main the strengths already existing within the school, helping experienced staff to develop their skills as mentors and trainers. Everything we know about schools is that teachers matter. The development of teachers is the most important priority for a school.
