Sadly Chris Raves passed away. He was only 60 and had been suffering from liver cancer for the last 3 or 4 years.

Chris was one of the longest serving LMC members, he was a member when I joined back in 1979. He was a competent rock climber leading at HVS/VS, an accomplished alpinist and loved ski-ing and ski touring. We climbed many notable alpine peaks together including the Eiger, Weisshorn, Wetterhorn,Dent Blanche, Blumlisalp traverse and had many ski touring trips including a visit to the Caucasus, we also had many piste skiing holidays together both at Meribel and based at Pete's caravan in Chamonix. Hut approach walks with Chris were enlivened by Chris's knowledge of alpine flowers and butterflies, though I have to confess I sometimes thought stopping to admire the gentians or edelweiss was just an excuse for a rest!!

It is hard not to remember Chris without smiling, many of the classic moments that have passed into Club folklore involved Chris, usually on the wrong end of a practical joke which he took with remarkable good humour. It is hard to mention the words 'dubbin' and 'toast' without giggling. His love of fast cars and somewhat erratic driving are legendary. He was one of the characters that made the LMC what it is.

He will not be forgotten.
