Last Meeting: AGM and Games evening

The following are not formal minutes of the AGM but the Editor's overview.

The AGM passed off very smoothly with all reports being accepted.

The main officers were re-elected save for the Secretary. We are in need of a person to fill the post of Secretary but unfortunately no one seems willing to undertake this at present. Peter has agreed to take on the role of acting Secretary in the meantime in addition to producing the Newsletter, and being webmaster and Vice-Chairman.

The Secretary's work involves writing up minutes of meetings (AGM and Committee) and corresponding with outside speakers etc. Dgs has agreed to remain on the Committee and continue with the latter task.

We also elected Michael to stand on the Committee. Paul Moore has decided to retire from the Committee after many years for personal reasons. I'm sure you would all like to join me in thanking Paul for all his enthusiasm, work and dedication to the club since it began.

The formal part of the evening was followed by a Games session with Michael showing Age of Empires III running on a PC. This adventure game involves building communities with resources and increasing population, keeping marauders at bay and attacking other civilizations. It had very good graphics and became quite complicated with trading posts being built etc. Obviously this game could go on for hours and would take quite a while to learn and perfect your skill.

The second game was an Xbox360 game called Project(?) involving racing cars around cities. The city being portrayed with accurate 3D graphic views of, in our case, central London. A particular type of car can be chosen and driven with accelerator brake and steering. The aim being to run the fastest race. Going through the Admiralty arch at 100mph proved something of a challenge to most of us!

Thanks to those who brought along all the equipment to add a bit of fun to the evening.

We were also pleased to welcome back John Bell, a returning member from a few years ago.

A Video Projector for the Club

One of the other tasks of the Committee meeting was to determine which projector we will purchase; since Tony reported that we have now received sufficient funds from the renewed subscriptions to make a purchase. We have reviewed a short list on paper and are looking to check various suppliers. Since Tony and Gareth both intend visiting the Wakefield show this could prove a good opportunity to check out different models and suppliers.

Editorial

The Committee have had their first meeting and dgs was able to confirm the dates for our outside speakers for this year. We also discussed other venues than the Crown for the social function in August but we decided we should like feedback from members on how much they would be prepared to pay if we were to choose a more expensive venue. Perhaps people would like to email me via iceni@woolridge.org.uk regarding their views on costs for the evening. If anyone knows of a good restaurant which we could visit in the North Essex/ South Suffolk including Ipswich area please let us know.

One of Paul Moore's roles was as PD software librarian. The library is stored on floppy discs but interest in this has not been a very active area for the club since floppy discs went out of fashion. I intend to publish the list of PD software titles which was solely RISCOS software. It would be quite feasible to put this on a CD if there is sufficient interest. Perhaps you would like to express your views on the subject.

There was also some discussion of the IRC sessions. It has been agreed that we will look at other servers than Wolfgar to see if we can restart the service and regenerate interest. It was a means by which we could maintain regular contact with friends and distant members. There is also a new version of Cretin available for RISCOS, the only native IRC Client. Let us know what you think about this too.
