This will be a hands-on meeting and if sufficient people bring computers with either WiFi cards or network cards then we should be able to link everyone together.
Gareth is hoping to bring along Airport Express, an Apple wireless access point that also features a USB port for printer sharing, and a line out connection to allow streaming audio to a hi-fi. With iTunes software on a PC or Mac you can stream music from your PC.
Gareth may also talk about streaming audio/video over wireless.
Not strictly wireless related, but certainly networking related Gareth was going to talk about the M0n0wall project (yes they are zero's in the name!!) which is an open source router/firewall based on FreeBSD. It runs on most PC hardware, but also certain embedded hardware, and he has built his own, which he hopes to demonstrate.
Gareth says if we need something to act as a DHCP server for devices, we could use this!!!
Frank has agreed to bring a laptop with wireless card and Peter a PC and Sharp Zaurus 5500 with a Symbol Spectrum 24 Compact flash format card. We should have enough for a bit of fun! I hope you will all come along.
This started off badly when we arrived at the Bowling Green Pub and were informed by a somewhat surly head waitress that we would have an hour's wait for a table! This despite it being an enormous place and having several empty tables.
Fortunately Frank's daughter lives near to Weeley and his wife Anne very kindly phoned her to get some local knowledge of alternative restaurants in the area and was able to make a booking for us. So after a while we all drove in convoy to the Black Boy at Weeley. That is to say, we decided to drive in convoy, but were waiting for dgs for 5 minutes to drive from the far end of the car park at the Bowling Green before we realised that he must have already gone to the Black Boy! Anyway he was, of course, waiting for us when we got there; and puzzled as to why we were delayed! This caused some amusement, which lightened up the evening, and we were pleasantly surprised to find the dining room of the Black Boy to be an ideal size and beautifully decorated and that the menu was excellent and reasonably priced ( AND the waitress was very friendly and helpful!)
After this a very pleasant and jolly evening was had by all. Unfortunately Royal had been unable to join us. Having recently been in hospital, his car had been unused for some time and being too low in fuel would not start, and after a 2 hour wait for the AA it was too late for him to join us. We wish him well and hope that we can arrange to see him in the near future.
We are very grateful to Anne for getting us out of a fix. I include a few shots below, four from Frank and three of my own to give a flavour of the evening! Thanks Frank.
This is ongoing but there is no progress to report at the moment.
I hope you have all had a good summer break and will be raring to go as the nights draw in. Our first meeting on Wireless networking should be a good start.
