INT. PLANE
A very crowded plane. A baby cries somewhere at the front. Julie, Ray, and Karla sit towards the back. Karla is flipping through a woman magazine while Julie and Ray reminisce about past times in Southport.
RAY
Yeah, the crab boil at Ollie's has
always been my favorite part of the
Fourth of July parade. Then, of course,
the Miss Croaker Queen pageant.
JULIE
Yeah. Helen looked so lovely in her outfit.
They talk as if Helen is still alive, so we know they have both moved on in their lives. They are more reassured people leading productive lives.
KARLA
I just can't wait to get there. You
two have been talking about nothing
but Southport for the past twenty
minutes. Man, how long does this plane
ride last?
Julie smiles.
CUT TO:
EXT. AIRPORT
A large and bustling airport.
INT. AIRPORT/MAIN GATE
The three friends walk through the busy crowds, lugging their suitcases behind them.
JULIE
All we do is have to get a taxi to
take us to Southport.
RAY
That could take a while. This place is
full with people.
KARLA
I don't mind the wait. So, what are we
gonna do when we get there?
JULIE
Get unpacked and probably go out and
meet some friends. We can get into the
heavy holiday stuff later; I don't
think we any of us could handle it the
second we step into the town.
RAY
Yeah, and I want to see Bill again.
JULIE
Who's Bill?
RAY
Friend of mine who worked the boats
with me. Great guy. You'll like him.
KARLA
You know, I have never been out in
the country. I mean, I've always lived
in the cities. Never once have I
seen a star-filled sky without city lights.
JULIE
It's so beautiful. You just get caught
up in the beauty.
RAY
Remember when we went on our first date?
Sitting underneath the stars watching
the sun come up?
JULIE
It was magic.
KARLA
And corny.
The three friends continue on, and soon get lost in the crowd. None of them notice the sinister slicker figure that comes into view...
CUT TO:
EXT. JULIE'S HOUSE - LATER
A taxi pulls up, and all three friends get out. They pull their luggage out of the trunk and the cab pulls off.
JULIE
(to Karla)
There it is. The house I grew up in.
It's gonna be great to see my mom
and all my old friends. Especially Deb.
RAY
Yeah, Deb's the greatest.
KARLA
Who's Deb?
RAY
Remember the time she put bleach into
the shower heads?
JULIE
(cracking up)
Yeah! All the girls had bleached hair
for weeks! The parents went crazy.
KARLA
Who's Deb?
JULIE
Yeah, she's great. She's one of the
main reasons I stayed in college. The
best roommate ever.
KARLA
Excuse me?
But Julie has run ahead, because her mother, MRS. JAMES, has opened the door. Karla turns to Ray.
KARLA
She best not be black.
CUT TO:
INT. JULIE'S HOUSE/KITCHEN
They all sit around the table in the light kitchen.
MRS. JAMES
So, how's school?
JULIE
Great. I aced all my tests. In fact,
I'm very close to becoming a lawyer.
RAY
She's been studying very hard.
MRS. JAMES
I'm so glad. I remember when you were
almost kicked out...
JULIE
Mom, that is so far behind me.
MRS. JAMES
That's good, honey.
KARLA
Yeah, Julie has really gotten her shit
together.
MRS. JAMES
(not knowing what to say)
That's nice, Karla.
JULIE
Ray, as you now, is now an official author.
He's working on his next book.
RAY
It's about fishermen, and what better
place to write it in than Southport?
MRS. JAMES
That's great. I'm glad you two are doing
well. I can't wait for you to have a baby.
JULIE
Woah!
RAY
A baby?
JULIE
I am so NOT ready to have a baby. I mean,
we only just got married.
MRS. JAMES
It's been a year.
RAY
We're still in school.
MRS. JAMES
I'm not getting any younger, and I have
no other kids. If Julie doesn't start
popping out the babies now, I'll be too
old to do anything with them. So, who's
up for cake?
She smiles innocently and Karla smirks at Julie across the table.
CUT TO:
EXT. DOCKS
The place is very loud and bustling. Fishermen come and go. Ray walks over to a boat called "Betty." BILLY, a young man in his early twenties with blond hair, is dumping a load of fish onto the floor of his boat.
RAY
Hey there, Billy-boy.
Billy looks up and smiles.
BILLY
Ray! Didn't think I'd ever see you back
here again.
RAY
Yeah, Julie and I wanted to come down
here for the Fourth of July. Celebrate
our independence and all that.
BILLY
No shit? The Fourth of July is when
we celebrate independence? I didn't
know that.
He breaks out into a goofy grin and Ray laughs. He hops up onto the boat. The two hug.
RAY
How are things going?
BILLY
Fine. Tina and I are still dating.
RAY
You are? That's great, man.
BILLY
Yeah. I think I'm gonna pop the question
soon.
RAY
Man, that's awesome! Marriage is the best
thing in the world. After Julie and I
married, the world became less chaotic,
you know? I mean, sharing life with somebody
else is fantastic.
BILLY
I bet. How about you and Julie come with
me and Tina to Southport's new restaurant
tonight? Kind of a pre-Fourth of July party.
RAY
Sounds like fun. I'll ask her.
BILLY
Great. It'll give us time to talk. A
million things have happened.
RAY
Well, I have some free time now. Why
don't we talk?
The two friends sit down and begin chatting.
CUT TO:
EXT. SOUTHPORT STREETS/PIZZA HUT
Julie and Karla stand outside Pizza Hut, waiting for someone.
KARLA
(sarcastic)
Is Deb always this punctual?
JULIE
She just likes to make an entrance.
Karla sighs, looks at her watch.
KARLA
She better hurry her ass up. I'm hungry
as hell.
JULIE
There she is!
She points to a red Saturn coming down the road. It pulls into a parking space and DEB jumps out, excited. Julie races over to her and they hug.
JULIE
DEB! OH MY GOD!
DEB
JULIE! HOW ARE YOU?
KARLA
Hi.
But she is ignored as the former friend heads into Pizza Hut. Karla sighs, a devastated look on her face. She walks inside after them.
KARLA
This is going to be one long summer.
Yep. One very long summer.
