Amy Mayfield's father - Thomas Mayfield, who was a very well-known and respected documentarian - had been visiting Alpine University in the late 70's when Solomon (now a professor at Alpine) was a student there. Solomon was vying for the infamous Hitchcock Award with one of his movies - as was tradition at Alpine - which would give him a guaranteed film career in Hollywood. However, tragedy struck when the judging commitee tied his entry with another. Unsure which was the better project, the commitee turned to Amy's father - noble and respected as he was - to cast the deciding vote. He voted against Solomon's work, and so Solomon lost his chance at Hollywood fame and turned to teaching film instead of actually making it. It really burned him, and he vowed to get revenge.
So when, in the year 2000, he saw Travis' great movie, he stole it and switched Travis' original print with a different movie, giving Travis' "film" a bad grade. Solomon - realising that if 'his' movie became a bit hit, Travis would be see that it was actually his - killed Travis and made it look like a suicide. He then was going to frame Amy as the murderer so his revenge would be complete and he would become a bigshot director. However, his plans were foiled by the campus security guard - Reese Wilson - who showed up just in time to save the last surviving students that Solomon needed to bump off in order to have a clear shot at passing off Travis' movie as his own.
Professor Solomon now no longer teaches at Alpine, but is something of a human vegetable in a local mental institute. He won't be lonely, however, as one of the nurses seems to have taken a liking to him. They both appear to have a common interest at heart...
