A series of one-hour D&T activities starting with the introduction of the concept Design for Need. This was followed by four one-hour sessions developing the idea, geometrical drawing and card-cutting to begin modelling an intermediate technology maize-mill for rural Africa and famine relief. Over 100 slides covering learning objectives, lesson plans and lesson evaluations, product research and analysis, geometrical drawing, context research in Africa, food and cooking, and museum mill reference pictures. This material is suitable for secondary school and college studies. The CD label illustration features white hominy grits.

Look at the famine situation in 2004 in Southern Sudan! Remember Ethiopia, Mozambique and Sierra Leone, watch out for Zimbabwe. Africa, a continent in crisis.

Additional resources include a short presentation on; Structural paper products (17 slides), on; BETT2004 with weblinks (128 slides), and on; Why Teach Design & Technology (6 slides). The materials are relevant to teachers and D&T student teachers. All make effective use of PowerPoint and photography and typography of relevance to ICT studies.

A collection of 46 photographs taken in Barcelona in Spring 2004 with an emphasis on the architectural and design products of Antoni Gaudi. The few captions are written in Spanish. Location are weblinked to further resources for study which are usually in English, occasionally with Spanish alternative websites. This is relevant to Art & Design but could be used in Geography. The subject could be of interest to students of Spanish language.The CD label illustration features the Parliament of Catalonia.

Jack the Ripper's Haunts, 1888, History

From a series of visits in December 2003 and January 2004 a compilation of 103 location photographs follows the haunts of Jack the Ripper's Whitechapel murders in 1888. This is supported with detailed historical notes. This module is suitable for planning a walk in Whitechapel, or for revision. The CD label illustration features a period house in Fournier Street. Additionally the text has been machine-translated into Japanese for the London Japanese community.

Woodbridge and Sutton Hoo, History

Woodbridge is a Suffolk town with many fine streets and historical buildings rising from the banks of the River Deben. Across the water on the opposite uplands lie the archaeological site and visitor centre of Sutton Hoo, in the care of the National Trust. For those unable to travel to the rural location, this collection of 70 photographs is a colourful resource for Key Stage 2 studies. The CD label illustration features the modern sculptural interpretation of the seventh century metal mask which hangs above the entrance to the visitor centre at Sutton Hoo.

Brunel Metal-machining Safety, D&T

The 3-Day course in metal machining safety at Brunel University was followed and documented with experience of all the necessary machines and processes to gain DATA certification. The product is a hand vice. A sequence of 115 slides and supporting notes feature the sequence of processes and safety procedures instructed on the course. It is not a substitute for the qualification but a valuable revision resource, relevant to students, technicians and teaching staff. The CD label illustration features the hand vice produced on the course.

Brunel Wood-machining Safety, D&T

Yixing Stoneware Teapots

A private collection of antique and contemporary stoneware teapots from 1662 to the twentieth century, made in Yixing, China. Over 70 slides illustrating about 60 teapots. Inspiring to potters of all ages and abilities. The CD label illustration features a teapot made during the Dauguang period, between 1821 and 1851.

The Cold War, History

The Cold War is a wide subject but it has been focused through a visit to the Royal Naval cruiser H.M.S. Belfast which is moored in the River Thames as a museum exhibition venue. Additional historical events include The Korean War in which the cruiser fought as well as texts on nuclear research, Monte Bello Islands - with unique pictures related to the British atomic test - Berlin, Communism, The Suez Crisis, Viet Nam, China, Cuba, The Space Race, The Berlin Wall, Test Ban Treaties, The Soviet Union and Peace at the end of The Cold War.
