Vale Farm Horticultural Society is owned by Barnet Council and is situated in East Finchley, leasing aproximately 5 acres of land, most of the 30 plots are let and are either 5 or 10 poles in size (125 square metres or 250 square metres). Occasionally smaller plots can be arranged, ideal for beginners or those with less time to spend. The site is in a secluded location with hard paths to parking area. All gates are kept padlocked with each plotholder having their own key.

To become a member and rent a 5 pole plot costs between £10 to £17 a year, or less for those over 62 years of age. There are almost as many women as men working the plots and ages range from holders with young families to 80-year-olds.

The Borough of Barnet owns the site. Local management is devolved to a committee, elected annually and all members are welcome to make suggestions and comments. Vale Farm Horticultural Society is affiliated to the Barnet Federation of Allotment and Horticultural Societies, which gives advice and support when needed. The Secretary is also a member of the National Vegetable Society where further advice can be obtained.
