Straffan Weir - The first weir just 800 metres from the start!

The LIFFEY DESCENT is undoubtedly the most well known canoe event in Europe because of its guaranteed water conditions and the outstanding party atmosphere that surrounds it to make the best canoeing weekend anywhere.

With Dublin being only 119 minutes across the Irish Sea from Holyhead, I am sure that having tried it once then you will want to return year after year as so many other participants do. It is a race that has 1200 competitors with only about 400 in true racing Kayaks or Canoes. Everybody else is taking part purely for the good time that is had by everybody, before, during and finally after the event. The Saturday night party is definitely something not to be missed.

So if you want to capture the excitement of one of Europe's most demanding & thrilling canoeing events, then the place to be is at the year 2009 ICU Liffey Descent. Approximately twelve hundred canoeists from around the world, will once again challenge the River Liffey, in hope of beating it’s 10 infamous weirs, that test every competitors skill, strength, stamina and humour.

Whether on the water or watching from the banks, the excitement of overcoming a River in Full Flood captivates both canoeists and spectators alike. Unlike a lot of races this high water is guaranteed, as it is a dam release especially for the race.

The Race covers 17.6 miles (28.2 Km) from Straffan, Co Kildare to Island Bridge, Dublin. You don't have to be a racing paddler to enter, as all classes of boats are welcome. Just come for a good time! This is the ultimate club trip away with some clubs having over 25 members attending.
