Preserved Railways Web SitesMid-Hants Railway ("The Watercress Line") is a preserved heritage railway, operating steam trains in Hampshire, England. The Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1960. Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices. The Merchant Navy Locomotive Society was formed in 1965 with the dual aims of saving one of the unique Merchant Navy Class locomotives for posterity and maintaining it in running order. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway provides some 18 Miles of preserved steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors. The line is owned by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust who have run the line as a living museum since 1974. The award-winning Swanage Railway currently operates on the six miles of track between Swanage and Norden, through the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, passing the magnificent ruins of Corfe Castle. The Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway (SKLR) was originally formed in 1969 to take over the operation of the southern half of the narrow gauge industrial line which ran between Bowater's paper mill at Sittingbourne via the paper mill at Kemsley to Ridham Dock on the banks of the River Swale. The Strathspey Railway is located in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. With the Cairngorm Mountains at close hand the area is a favourite tourist attraction for its natural beauty and the wide range of outdoor pursuits that such an area can offer.
