Projects
Work started at the beginning of the summer in 1998 to renovate a large layout dating from the early '70s. It is now
located at its permanent home at Demelza House Children's Hospice.
Restoration took approximately one year to complete.

Demelza Restoration Project
During the summer of 1998, the Isle of Thanet
Railway Society was approached by the Margate Rotary Club as to whether the societies members would be prepared to
undertake the restoration of a model railway layout that had been presented to the Rotary Club for donation to a worthy cause. As the Rotary Club said that they would like to present the railway layout to Demelza Hospice at Sittingbourne, for the young children of Kent, the societies members readily agreed.
The following is a list of one-line statements outlining what was done.
- Removal of water damaged and decayed scenery.
- Reinforce the existing framework.
- Remove existing wiring and control panel.
- Rewire layout and construct a new control panel with a new power supply.
- Create new landscape scenery with modern materials, to re-create the original layout.
- Make new trees and shrubbery.
- Construct and reproduce new roadway, complete with lighting.
- Renew or rebuild damaged bridges and create a new tunnel beneath landscaping.
- Renew platforms and station building.
- Rebuild and renew a parade of shops and houses.
- Construct a new automatic tramway to run in front of the shops.
- Bring the layout to life with animals, people and vehicles.
- Set-up and test layout before delivery to Demelza House.
