... MATCH REPORT ...
Ipswich Rhinos 90 - 0 St Albans
30th June 2001
"RHINOS STAY TOP WITH RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE"

Ipswich stayed on course for a second Eastern Division title in three seasons with this groundbreaking win over a shell shocked St Albans. In recording the best result of the day, Ipswich also moved up to tenth place, overall in the national league table. Skipper for the day Mike Reeves led by example running in a hattrick of tries and linking up well with assistant player Coach Richard Pollard to set up a host of try scoring opportunities for a hardworking Ipswich unit. In a great all round team performance the Le Marquand Brothers were responsible for more than a third of the total points scored (32) with Pete kicking 10 conversions and full back Paul weighing in with two tries.

In all no fewer than Eleven players got on to the score sheet to share the seventeen tries. Ipswich coach Dave Mortimer was unable to attend the match as He was on duty for the RAF`s game with Great Britain Students. He would have been delighted to see all of his hard work come to fruition as the players worked hard to carry out the moves drilled into them by Mortimer and assistant coach Pollard. Ipswich`s task was made easier by the 27th minute sending off of St Albans Loose Forward Simons for a blatant high challenge that left Pollard requiring assistance for a bloodied face.

Referee Dave Lowe of St Helens had no hesitation in dismissing the player in a otherwise clean contest. At the time Ipswich were only 20-0 up and the home side went on to lead 34-0 at the break. Ipswich found another gear in the second half almost tripling the final score. The result was just short of the club record score of 96 -0 acheived against North London(SRL Old Boys) in the Old London League Division Two in 1996.But the 90-0 scoreline was Ipswich`s best ever in the Rugby League conference. With four games remaining before the end of season play offs Ipswich are in pole position to qualify. On Saturday Iswich begin three weeks on the road with a visit to Oxford.

Norfolk face a daunting trip to Hemel Hempstead a fixture they have won in recent seasons. The two rival East anglian clubs clash in the eagerly awaited East Anglian Derby at North Walsham on Saturday 21st July.
