RUGBY
LEAGUE CONFERENCE
MAY
4th 2002
COVENTRY BEARS 40 - 6 IPSWICH RHINOS
Ipswich
went down to a stronger and well prepared home side at the beautifully
appointed Broadstreet Rugby Club on the outskirts of Coventry on Saturday.
In a great show of cross code co-operation, Ipswich Rugby Union club
provided the Rhinos with their own kit to avoid clashing with the Bears
new blue and white kit, while the Broadstreet ground held the kick off
of an important County clash between Warwickshire and Staffordshire
on the same pitch right after the Conference clash had ended. With the
Bears home ground unavailable, this was a marvellous gesture by the
Broadstreet club and showed other snooty Rugby Union clubs around what
can be acheived when people get their heads together.

pswich
gifted Coventry the opening two tries of the game through handling errors
while on the attack and Coventry went into the break 14-0 up. Coventry
kept ahead in the second period before a late rally rewarded a plucky
Ipswich side a try through Paul Roberts converted by Richard Pollard.
But for a fumble over the line by the unlucky Pollard double figures
beckoned for the Rhinos. Both sets of players and officials look forward
to the reverse fixture as there was a good spirit between these two
friendly clubs. Ipswich hope for better fortune on their extended tour
of the Midlands when they travel to Bedford next Saturday to play the
Swifts.
