RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
31
May 2003
Cambridge Eagles 0 - 86 Ipswich Rhinos
The
Cambridge match programme recalled the first meeting between these two
clubs five years ago, significant in that it has been the only Cambridge
victory in this local derby. Saturdays score was a true measure of the
gulf that now exists between these two clubs. Cambridge in the blazing
heat played with pride and stuck to their task until the final whistle
but were well beaten by a Rhinos side who were stronger in all quarters,
nine men sharing in the sixteen trys.

Mike
Reeves opened the scoring within 3 minutes with a 40 yard run through
the Cambridge defence and Mike Fields added a second on 8 minutes when
the Rhinos spread the ball across a crowded Cambridge line creating
space for Fields to score in the corner. On 19 minutes Patrick Duffy
broke through a number of tackles only to be stopped just short of the
line, but Dave West completed the try with a simple scoot. Patrick Duffy
was not to figure on the score sheet but turned in another solid performance
and created the fourth try when on 23 minutes he ripped the ball from
an Eagles defender in the tackle and popped the ball out to Matt Harwood
to score from 10 yards.

2002 'Most improved player of the year' Andy Wilson looks sharper than
ever and scored the first of his two trys on 30 minutes when he battled
his way through the Cambridge defence from 15 yards out after Cambridge
had conceded a penalty in front of their own posts. Adam Cook ruffled
the Eagles feathers with a number fine runs on the right wing and was
unlucky not to get on the score sheet on several occasions. On 36 minutes
Cook was held within a yard of the Cambridge line, Ipswich moved the
ball quickly through the hands across the full width of the pitch for
Mike Reeves to score his second Try. On the stoke of half time Tane
Trafford broke from the half way line to score under the posts. Peter
Le Marquand converting 5 of the 7 first half trys to make the score
38-0 at half time.

Within
minutes of the restart Paul LeMarquand run in a try from a well worked
penalty move followed by Mike Fields second try of the day when he flat
footed the Cambridge defence in the centre of the field and crossed
the line from 40 yards. Cambridge never showed any signs of frustration,
they maintained discipline through out and stuck to their own game,
but as they tired the penalty account against them for technical offences
rose and in previous weeks the Rhinos finishing from penalties was clinical.
On 50 minutes Brendan Cook split the Cambridge defence to score with
an angled run from a penalty in front of the posts. Minutes later Cook
was denied a second try when he was held up on the Cambridge line but
an Eagles defender was penalised for ripping the ball after the tackle
was called and from the penalty the ball was spun wide to Matt Harwood
to score from 10 yards.

On
56 minutes Andy Wilson scored his second try from 15 yards after breaking
through a number of tackles and minutes later Peter LeMarquand ghosted
through a pack of Cambridge players unchallenged to score under the
posts. Brendan Cook capped another good defensive game with a second
try on 73 minutes and Mike Field completed a deserved hat trick with
minutes left on the clock. Paul Le Marquand completed the scoring on
the stroke of full time with a break from the half way line and converted
6 out of nine of the second half trys to make the final score Cambridge
Eagles 0 Ipswich Rhinos 86.
