RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
12
July 2003
Ipswich Rhinos 64 - 0 Cambridge
A sporting
Cambridge side chased and harassed the Rhinos through out a game played
in blazing sunshine and on a rock hard pitch, but the game started to
slip away from them as early as 20 second when the Rhinos recovered
the ball from their kick off, and Brendan Cook raced through the Eagles
defence to score from 30 yards. However, the Rhinos struggled to find
their rhythm in the first 15 minutes, which allowed Cambridge to complete
several sets of six tackles within striking distance of the Ipswich
line. In an attempt to pull back early points Cambridge made several
drop goal attempts, one of which pasted through the posts but was ruled
out by the referee as a punt instead of a clean drop kick.

On
15 minutes Cambridge conceded a penalty on the half way line from which
Peter Le Marquand made good yardage before popping the ball off to Andy
Windridge to crash through the Cambridge defence from 15 yards. Peter
Le Marquand converted the first of four first half conversions. Within
minutes Cambridge conceded another mid field penalty which Peter Le
Marquand kicked neatly into the corner for touch. On the first and second
tackle Dan Garbutt and Richard Burton were both held up on the line,
but the third pass found Peter Smith. Playing his first game back from
University and a contender for man of the match, Smith dummied his marked
and made an excellent angled run to score by the posts. On 24 minutes
Andy Windridge scored his second with a charge from the half way line
breaking numerous tackles on the way, and Alex Stratton -Thomsett put
the Eagles defence under pressure from a Peter Le Marquand kick and
was the first to the ball to touch down when the ball ran loose, to
score on 29 minutes.

Andy
Windridge completed his first half hat trick on 32 minutes when Brendan
Cook broke 50 yards from within his own half but was finally dragged
down 10 yards from the Cambridge line. Ipswich quickly recycled the
ball to Windridge to run in from 15 yards. Peter Le Marquand converted
to make it 4 from 7 first half conversions which with a break away try
from Mike Fields on the stoke of Half time made the half time score
36-0 to the Rhinos.

From
the Cambridge restart the Rhinos claimed possession and moved the ball
quickly through the hands to Chic Knox Macauley on the opposite wing,
who broke from within his own half to score in the first minute of the
second half. On 51 minutes Paul Le Marquand broke through the defensive
line and out paced the Cambridge defence to score the first of two trys
from 30 yards, and on 62 minutes quick passing along the attacking line
from a scrum, reached Dave Green on the overlap to score in the corner
for the Rhinos. A similar attacking move five minutes later again found
Dave Green on the left wing to run in his second try of the day from
close range. On 71 minutes the Rhinos were awarded a scrum 15 yards
in front of the Cambridge posts. Loose forward Brendan Cook broke from
the back of the scrum but was held up on the line under the posts. Ipswich
quickly recycled the ball to the right where it was collected at pace
by Paul Le Marquand to crash through the Eagles line for his second
try of the match.

The
Cambridge team spirit was best exemplified when, despite being reduced
to 12 men because of injury for most of the second half, they came closest
to scoring in the last few minutes of the game. Having completed a set
of six tackles within the Rhinos 10 yard line they were awarded a penalty
on the Ipswich line on the last tackle, and only desperate tackling
by the Rhinos kept the Eagles out on the next six tackles to make the
final score Ipswich 64 - Cambridge 0.

summer rugby has its advantages!
The
win puts the Rhinos back on top of the Eastern Division on point's difference
and assures the Rhinos of a Championship play off place. However, South
Norfolk Saints have a game in hand and beat Luton away on Saturday ending
any Luton hopes of a top two spot, so must now be favorites for the
Eastern title
