RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
28
June 2003
ESSEX EELS 44 - 16 IPSWICH RHINOS

The
Essex Eels proved too slippery for an Ipswich side struggling to find
their early season form. It was a stronger Eels side than the one comprehensively
beaten at Humber Doucy Lane at the beginning of the season but still
one the Rhinos would normally have brushed aside. Instead a succession
of missed tackles in the middle of the park allowed the Eels to break
the Rhinos defensive line and run in a number of breakaway trys. The
Eels opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a Mario De Magalmaes try
when he run round the outside of the Rhinos defence before cutting in
under the posts to give Mike Muir an easy conversion. This was soon
followed by a try from James Meadows who broke through a number of weak
tackles to run in from 20 meters. Mike Muir converting to make the score
12-0.

When
under pressure on their own try line the Rhinos tackling was sound but
in the middle of the park they missed regular pack members Dan Garbutt,
Steve Haylock and Patrick Duffy. On 28 minutes the defence was again
caught in two minds and the Eels scored a third converted try from 30
meters out, and on the stoke of half time made the score 24-0 when Mario
De Magalhaes again run through the Rhinos wide markers to score in the
corner.

The
Rhinos started the second half the stronger of the two sides and came
close to scoring on several occasions but for unforced errors in the
final few yards. Chik Knox Macauley and Peter LeMarquand made a number
of penetrating runs and finally on 57 minutes Ipswich broke fast down
the right and with men over moved the ball quickly through the hands
to Mike Fields to score in the corner. Peter Le Marquand converting
to pull the score back to 24-6. Ipswich went close to pulling the score
back further with both Brendan Cook and Andy Windridge getting close
to the line on determined runs and Dave Husband nearly crossed the line
from close range, but lost the ball in the tackle. Pushing forwards
the Rhinos began to look dangerous but just as a Rhinos revival looked
possible James Meadows and John Hickey found big gaps in the Rhinos
defence to score break away trys to make score 32-6 to the Eels.

From
the restart Paul Le Marquand finished a fine passing move to score the
Rhinos second try but the Eels quickly responded when Greame Richmond
completed a well worked penalty move. Ipswich put the Eels defence under
heavy pressure during the late stages of the game. At one point the
Rhinos were held on the Eels line on three successive tackles before
the ball was centred to Brendan Cook to run in unopposed from 15 meters
to score under the posts. Peter Le Marquand converting. The Eels, however,
were to have the last say when on the final whistle Daniel Legg scored
another breakaway try to make the final score 44 -16 to the Essex Eels.

The
Eels win over the Rhinos opens the Eastern Division table wide open
with Luton now top on points difference, followed by Ipswich and South
Norfolk all on ten points Next Week Luton Vipers are the visitors to
Humber Doucy lane. A win is now essential to ensure a top two spot for
