RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
10th
May 2003
Ipswich Rhinos 62 - 10 Essex Eels

Ipswich
Rhinos recorded their second victory of the new season with a comprehensive
home win over conference new boys Essex Eels. Despite a first minute
unconverted try from Mike Fields, the Rhinos didn't find their rhythm
until the middle of the first half. When the Eels took the lead on 8
minutes with a converted try from John Martin and there was no hint
of the scoring spree to come. On 20 minutes Chik Knox-MacCaulay picked
his way through a crowded Eels defence to put the Rhinos back in the
lead, four minutes later Knox-MacCaulay extended the lead further with
a carbon copy of his first try. Both trys converted by Peter Le Marquand.
On 28 minutes good crossfield play from the Rhinos found Dave West on
the wing. He ran round the outside of the Eels defence to score in the
corner to extend the lead to 20 - 6. Eels pulled a try back through
John Hickey only for Chik Knox-MacCaulay to complete his hat trick for
the Rhinos with a break from the halfway line to score under the posts.
Peter Le Marquand converting to make the score 26 - 10 at half time.

The
second half started as the first had finished with Chik Knox-McCaulay
scoring within a minute of the re-start. From an Eels 22 metre drop-out
Rhinos secured the ball and re-cycled it quickly into the centre where
it was collected at speed by Chik Knox-Macaulay who ran it through the
centre of the Eels defence to score under the posts. The rest of the
second half was one way traffic. The Eels discipline slipped as they
started to tire and they paid for it with by giving away needless penalties.
The Rhinos finishing from set pieces was outstanding as the Eels failed
to cope with Ipswichs fast mobile forwards. Andy Windridge scored for
the Rhinos on 48 minutes with a fine run through the centre of the Eels
defence and Dave Signor added a further try after the Eels conceded
a penalty for taking out the kicker after he had played the ball. Mike
Field scored his second try of the afternoon after the Eels conceded
a penalty just outside their 22-metre area, for laying on his man in
the tackle. Steve Haycock scored with a fine run through the centre,
after the Rhinos worked their tackles well from a penalty after Trafford
was dragged into touch after the tackle had been completed. Finally
on the stroke of full time Duffy fielded the ball well from an Eels
kick and made 30 metres to put the Rhinos just into the Eels half. From
the tackle Chik Knox-MacCaulay recycled the ball quickly and split the
Eels defence with a 40-metre run to score his 5th and final try under
the posts. All second half tries were converted by Peter LeMarquand
to give the final score of 62 -10.

The
Eels stuck gamely to the task throughout with Mike Muir penetrating
the Ipswich defence with some powerful runs and on several occasions
they were held up over the Rhinos line. Free-scoring Ipswich have notched
up over 100 points in their first two matches of the season, but arguably
now face their hardest game of the year when they travel to Luton Vipers
next Saturday.
