RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
14
June 2003
Ipswich Rhinos 25 - 42 South Norfolk
A physical,
well-drilled South Norfolk side outplayed an out of sorts Rhinos team
in every quarter. After two easy high-scoring games the Rhinos struggled
to find the discipline to match the Saints' direct attacking tactics
and suffered their first defeat of the season. Ipswich were forced to
re-organise their defence as early as the eleventh minute after losing
influential loose forward Steve Haycock through injury. South Norfolk
took an immediate advantage with Nick Greenall finding a large gap in
the Rhinos' defence to run in their first try from close range. Ipswich
responded from the re-start with a try by Mike Fields, and briefly took
the lead 5-4 with Peter LeMarquand's drop goal in what was probably
their best attacking spell of the game.

On
25 minutes, Horne put the Saints back in the driving seat with a try
in the corner, and then Groom showed great physical strength with two
tries driven over from close range. Atkinson pulled a try back for Ipswich
on the stroke of half-time after excellent work by Dave West, who chased
down a defender following an early long kick through, then one on one,
wrestled the player within yards of the line. In an attempt to off load
the ball the defender conceded a scrum from which the Rhinos moved it
quickly through the hands to the opposite corner to Atkinson to score
in the far corner.

The
late first half try lifted the Rhinos and they looked to have turned
the corner when within minutes of the restart Dave West ran in a try
on the left wing which was again converted by Peter LeMarquand to bring
Ipswich within one score of the Saints. However the Saints responded
immediately with a converted try, and further tries by Bishop and Kwong
made the score 34-15 in favour of South Norfolk by the middle of the
second half. In the 65th minute the referee judged Daniel Garbutt to
be guilty of a dangerous tackle, even though he was only the third man
in the tackle, and produced the red card. Groom of the Saints foolishly
took matters into his own hands and within seconds of the re-start was
also dismissed, for a outrageous high tackle on Patrick Duffy, which
also side lined the Rhino player for the rest of the match. Kent added
a final try for the Saints, who despite late tries by Dave Husband and
Brendan Cook, finished comfortable winners by 42-25.
