TOTALRL.COM RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE

19 July 2003

St Ives 28 - 52 Ipswich Rhinos

Ipswich came to St Ives on one of the hottest days of the year to meet a much improved and spirited side. The win guaranteed Ipswich first or second place in the Eastern Division Conference and therefore a place in the playoffs for the Harry Jepson Cup, involving the top 16 Conference teams across the country. For St Ives, in their first season in the Conference, this was a key fixture and whilst the result was never in doubt, the underdogs never allowed Ipswich to relax and scored five excellent tries.

Ipswich opened the scoring within the first minute when St Ives gave away a penalty for lying on at the play the ball, and prop Dan Garbutt powered over the line form 10 metres. Five minutes later, Peter LeMarquand converted his own try scored under the posts, following a fine run by Andy Wilson, and a break by Brendan Cook. Good pressure from St Ives resulted in a try under the posts by Andy Dean. Ipswich then consolidated their lead with 10 minutes of fast flowing rugby league, with two tries from Centre Mike Fields, who maintained his position as leading try scorer. Mike then fed the ball to Brendan Cook who went over to make the score 6 - 28. The Rhinos then took the foot off the accelerator allowing the home side back into the game with defensive lapses and unforced errors. The Roosters James Cannon scored twice before a touch of brilliance from Mike Fields, flicking the ball inside when he appeared to be bound for touch, and allowing Alex Stretton Thomsett to cut inside to score near the posts. Just before half-time Paul LeMarquand scored to make the score 16-38 at the interval.

The Roosters re-grouped in the second half to stop a Rhinos stampede(!) They started and finished the half with tries from Frisby and Dean, but Ipswich made sure of the result in between with 3 further tries, from Peter LeMarquand, Alex Stretton-Thomsett and Mike Reeves. Peter LeMarquand was Ipswich's man of the match, with 2 tries, 6 conversions and good captaincy. Credit should also be given to the high workrates throughout the game of David Signor, Vaughan Evans, Richard Burton and Daryl Walters.

Ipswich now await the result of the re-arranged South Norfolk - Luton match next Saturday before they enter the national play-offs starting on 2nd August. If results go to form Ipswich should have a home tie against West London at Humber Doucy Lane, 2.30 pm.
