RHINOS
MAINTAIN UNBEATEN RECORD
Cambridge Eagles 6 - 52 Ipswich Rhinos
Ipswich
Rhinos reached the halfway stage of the divisional fixtures on maximum
points with a comfortable win over an enthusiastic but inexperienced
Cambridge side. The plot was set for the afternoon as early as the second
minute when a Brendan Cook interception resulted in Nick Woodland scoring
the Rhinos first try on two minutes and on eleven minutes Peter Le Marquand
broke through the centre of the Cambridge defence to set Brendan Cook
on his way to score his first to make the score 10-0. On 14 minutes
Alex Stratton Thomsett scored in the corner after good cross-field play
found him on the overlap, Peter LeMarquand converting for the extra
points. Then on 21minutes Cambridge fumbled on their line trying to
steal the ball in the ruck resulting in the Rhinos tackle count being
reset to 0. On the first tackle Andy Wilson powered between two defenders
to score from close range.

George
Raw, outstanding at full back, collected a high ball behind his own
posts on 33 minutes and broke out a full 35 metres before popping the
ball to Mike Fields who carried it deep into the Cambridge half before
being tackled. Dave Signor quickly recycled the ball to Brendan Cook
for his second try of the game. Peter LeMarquand converting 3 of the
five tries to make the half time score 26-0.
Within
minutes of the restart Brendan Cook capped a man of the match performance
with his third try with a break through a crowded Cambridge defence
from the half way line, and from the restart good running from Joe Francis
set up Dave Husband to score under the posts. The Rhinos kept up the
pressure until the 52 rd minute when on the Last tackle instead of kicking,
a swift cross field passage of play found Nick Woodland on the opposite
wing to score his second of the day. Then, at the point many teams would
have folded Cambridge shifted up a gear for and for a 15-minute spell
caused the Rhino defence some real problems. Ipswich compounded their
pressure with several basic errors and from one such knock on Adrian
Aden forced himself over the line from close range to score Cambridge's
only try of the game, Barry Immes converting.

However,
the Rhinos re-established their superiority in the final 15 minutes
when a Dave Husband break set up Tane Trafford to score in the corner
and Mike fields maintained his try a game record after Andy Wilson and
Brendan Cook both made good yardage to set him on his way. Peter Le
Marquand capped another fine display with 6 out of 10 conversions to
make the final score 52-6 to the Rhinos.
This
coming Saturday the Rhinos entertain South Norfolk Saints in a local
derby at Ipswich Rugby Club, KO 2-30 PM.in what promises to be their
hardest game so far this season. Hopefully regular first team players
Darryl Walter, Chris Coates, Dave Gawne and Andy Windridge will all
be available after injury. The Rhinos will however be with out Brendan
Cook who will travelling to Scotland with the England Lionhearts to
play the Scottish Bravehearts in Glasgow on Sunday. Brendan has also
been named in the England Students squad touring France in early July.
