RHINOS
OPEN HOME CAMPAIGN WITH WIN
Ipswich Rhinos 42 - 4 Cambridge Eagles
Ipswich
needed all their guile to overcome a spirited Cambridge side in the
second round of the 2004 Rugby League Conference reports Barbara Peachy.
The Eagles showed they had not come to make up the numbers with a determined
display which kept the Rhinos at bay for the first 15 minutes. Dave
Husband broke the deadlock after concerted Ipswich pressure finally
told on the Cambridge defence. Peter Le Marquand added the conversion.
Daryl Walters added to the score on 20 minutes after the Rhinos made
full use of the tackle count with Le Marquand floating a long pass for
the second row to go over. Ipswich loose forward Andy Windridge was
having a towering game in defence and attack and his strong running
was creating numerous opportunities for Ipswich.
From
a sustained period of pressure Rhinos went further ahead when Steve
Haycock forced his way over. Cambridge got a deserved score when Nick
Langham pounced on a loose ball to burst through the Ipswich defence.
More pressure from Le Marquand’s boot led to panic in the Eagles’ defence
and the ball went loose behind the try line. Tane Trafford was first
to react, and Le Marquand converted the try. Cambridge were unable to
gather the ball from the re-start and hooker Paul Raw scored on the
stroke of half-time of his Rhinos debut, making the score at the interval
Ipswich 26 – Cambridge 4.
Ipswich
were first out of the blocks in the second half and Walters added his
second score of the day. Despite the scoreline Cambridge were a much
improved side from recent seasons and they enjoyed their best period
of the match with some rugged tackling and good combinations of play.
But with Trafford and Le Marquand controlling the midfield and Windridge
so dominant there was no way through. Husband added another try before
Mike Fields (pictured) added two late tries in the corner to keep up
his record of scoring in every league match in 2003 and so far this
year. Ipswich ended up comfortable winners of a tough encounter with
Cambridge.
The
Rhinos first team now have a gap weekend for the Challenge Cup final,
followed by a tough away fixture at rivals South Norfolk, who are also
unbeaten this season. Kick-off 2.30 at Thetford RU Club, Saturday 22
May. Meanwhile the Rhinos newly-established 2nd team have a home fixture
against Greenwich 2nds at Humber Doucy Lane on Saturday 15 May, kick-off
12.00 noon.
