RHINOS
SECOND TEAM IN CONVINCING WIN
Greenwich Admirals (II) 12 - 32 Ipswich Rhinos (II)
Ipswich
Rhinos 2nd team played Greenwich Admirals against the impressive backdrop
of Woolwich Barracks, coming away with a comfortable win despite having
a number of debutants in the side. The Rhinos were in the unusual position
of fielding two Rugby Union Internationals with Steve Haycock who played
for Malta last month and James Sarek who has been selected to play for
Nigeria U18s in July. Greenwich were first to score after 7 minutes
with a try in the corner, but Ipswich responded from a penalty, needing
three tackles to see Nick Williams touch down, Paul Le Marquand converting.

Within
three minutes Chris Conner found a gap to make 30 metres before Haycock
made another break, Dan Askew forcing himself over to score. The
Rhinos kept the pressure on and a 70 metre break from 16 year old Gwithion
Harding-Hider led to a try for Le Marquand who converted his own try.
The Admirals hit back soon before half time when a missed tackle allowed
them in for a second try to keep them in touch at half time with the
score at 16-8.

The
first 15 minutes of the second half was very even as both teams tried
to find a defensive chink, but the stalemate was broken when Sarek took
the ball at pace from 8 metres out to force himself over. Dan Askew
got his second try to effectively seal the game at 28-8 with 15 minutes
to go, but Greenwich did not give up and got a deserved try in the right
corner. Haycock finished off the scoring with a try to make the final
score 32-12. Captain Dan Garbutt was pleased with his team's performance,
in particular from the three 16 year olds who had been drafted in at
short notice.
