LONDON AMATEUR RUGBY LEAGUE

19 June 2004

RHINOS SECOND TEAM MAKE IT A WEEKEND DOUBLE
OVER
NORTH LONDON OPPOSITION

Ipswich Rhinos (II) 46 - 22 Haringey Hornets (II)

Ipswich Rhinos second team kept up their 100% record in the London Amateur Rugby League with a hard fought but entertaining 46-22 victory over Haringey Hornets. Haringey, affiliated to North London Skolars, started strongly and were soon putting pressure on the Ipswich line, and the defence held well until after 16 minutes the Hornets created an overlap to score in the left corner. The Rhinos hit back within three minutes when Joe Francis kicked a ball into the Hornets goal area for Paul Le Marquand to score and convert his own try. Undeterred the Hornets regained the lead with a fine solo try before the Rhinos' Paul Partrick stormed downfield to be stopped a metre short of the line. Two tackles later Partrick got over the line with Le Marquand's conversion giving Ipswich a 12-10 lead. Just before half time 16 year old Dom Gooch scored in the corner on his debut and the Rhinos went into the break 16-10 ahead.

The Rhinos took control in the second half with captain Dan Garbutt leading the way, forcing himself over the line five minutes after the restart. Haringey had their share of talented players and they came close to scoring, knocking on with the line at their mercy. Ipswich counter attacked through Francis who passed to Partrick in space, who ran 70 metre to score under the posts to give the Rhinos a 28-10 lead. A Dave Sims try extended the lead before the Hornets deservedly scored themselves. However, the Rhinos touched down three times more before Haringey score their fourth try. Just on the final whistle Partrick ran under the posts, but before he could claim his hat trick he was tackled a spilled the ball, so the final score remained at 48-22.
