RHINOS
RETAIN CONTROL DESPITE CHANGES
Hemel Stags 6 - 72 Ipswich Rhinos
Before
Saturdays kick off Ipswich were presented with a pennant, as the Parkhouse
Recruitment's team of the week, for the previous week's victory over
North London Skolars. Having seen off the Skolars, the only real serious
barrier between the Rhinos and the Eastern Division title, Ipswich know
they must remain focused on winning all remaining games as the Skolars
will be on their heels all the way. Such is the depth of experience
in the young Ipswich squad, despite some enforced changes in key positions
the Rhinos controlled this match from start to finish and steadily racked
up the points through out.

performance against North London last week
The
first try came as early as 6 minutes when Peter LeMarquand intercepted
a Hemel pass and carried the ball deep into the Stags half. Youngster
Adam Cook deputising for regular Hooker Dave Signor capitalised on slack
marking and scooted over the try line from the ruck. On 10 minutes Peter
LeMarquand performed a perfect switch move with Andy Windridge to open
up the Stags defence for Windridge to score from 20 yards. Brendan Cook
broke free from his tacklers on 17 minutes and covered some 30 yards
before off loading to Mike Fields on his outside. Fields drew the defence
towards the wing before popping the ball inside to Joel Barrett who
out paced the retreating defenders to score. Hemel kicked straight into
touch from the restart and from the quickly taken tapped penalty Rhinos
Nick Woodland set up Mike Fields for his first try of the day. A determined
solo run from Damon Marii-Metuarii caught the Rhinos napping on 23 minutes
and briefly pegged the score back to 20-6 but from the restart Adam
Cook again showed great opportunism by scoring his second try from scoot
from the back of a ruck.

On
29 minutes Peter LeMarquand kicked deep into the corner of the Stags
half and the advancing Rhinos attackers bundled the Hemel catcher into
touch. From the resulting set Peter LeMarquand set up Nick Woodland
to score. On the stroke of half time Adam Cook completed a first half
hat trick with a third scoot from the back of a ruck but left the field
at half time, to be replaced by Tane Trafford, due to a knee injury.
Peter LeMarquand kicked 4 out of 7 first half conversions to make the
half time score 36 - 6 to the Rhinos.

From
the restart Mike Fields finished a flowing cross-field movement to score
from 10 yards and on 53 minutes Brendan Cook battled through the Stags
defensive line to set up Nick Woodland for his second try. Stags then
enjoyed their best defensive period of the game holding the score at
48-6 for nearly 20 minutes but the Rhinos finished strongly with four
trys in the last twelve minutes. Peter LeMarquand added two trys in
quick succession. The first after a powerful run from Brendan Cook had
opened up the defence, the second from an equally impressive break from
Mike Reeves who made it to the foot of the post before being held. The
ball was quickly recycled to Peter LeMarquand who flatfooted his marker
with a dummy pass before stepping through the defensive line to score.

On
76 minutes Joel Barrett showed great pace in breaking out of his own
half and sprinting some 60 metres round the outside of the defence to
score under the posts, and on the stroke of full time Dave Husband push
through the Stag defenders to set up Stratton - Thomsett with a simple
try from 5 metres. Peter LeMarquand converted all six second half trys
to make the final score 72-6 to the Rhinos. On Saturday conference new
boys Middlesex Lions will be the visitors to Ipswich Rugby Club for
a 2-30 pm KO. Middlesex have lost all gams so far this season and have
a point's difference of over -500 points. However, the Rhinos can not
afford to relax as points difference could decide home advantage in
later play off games.
