RHINOS
DELIGHT AT LOCAL DERBY VICTORY
South Norfolk Saints 22 - 46 Ipswich Rhinos
Ipswich
Rhinos maintained their one hundred percent record with their third
straight win in the 2004 Conference. The Saints made Ipswich work hard
through out the game and had the better of the early exchanges but once
the Rhinos found their rhythm they steadily out scored the home side.
Both sides started cautiously taking care to complete their set of tackles
until the fifth minute when South Norfolk capitalised on a Rhino error
and Lumley put the home side ahead with a try from close range which
he converted himself. Ipswich, with a number of changes from the previous
match started to settle but let the home side of the hook on several
occasions with basic errors. However, on fourteen minutes the Saints
dropped the ball on their own 20 metre line and Rhino Adam Cook was
first to the loose ball and crossed the line for the Rhinos first try,
which was converted by Peter LeMarquand to level the scores at 6 points
all.
Andy
Windridge added a second try on 25 minutes and combined well with Dave
Husband on 32 minutes to set up a try for Mike fields. Both were converted
by Peter LeMarquand to extend the Rhinos lead to 18-6. Paul Scott was
outstanding for the Saints at full back and made several excellent runs
out of the defence to relieve the Rhinos pressure. It was from one such
run that South Norfolk found the space to send Dixie clear from 30 metres
to score under the Rhinos posts, Lumley converting. From the restart
the Rhinos regained possession and Husband made good ground before off
loading to Darryl Walters who broke through numerous tackles to score
on the stroke of half time. Peter LeMarquand converting to give the
Rhinos a 24-12 lead at the break.

From
the restart Ipswich immediately put the Saints try line under pressure.
As they moved the ball across field looking for a gap in the Norfolk
defence the ball ran loose from a poor pass but was gathered up by Cook
with his back to the Norfolk posts. Cook evaded two tacklers as he turned
and sprinted in from 15 metres for an unconverted try. On 50 minutes
Scott reduced the Saints arrears to 18 - 28. Dixie seized on a dropped
ball on the half way line and made good ground before off loading to
Paul Scott to cross the line, Lumley converting to keep the Saints in
touch However Ipswich quickly extended their lead when Saints conceded
a penalty for spear tackling Coates on their 20 metre line. In the resulting
set of six Richard Burton was held up on the line and Dave Signor capped
a fine performance scoring with a dive through the defenders legs from
the ruck.
On
sixty minutes The Rhinos conceded a penalty close to their own line
for not retreating 10 metres which resulted in an unconverted try for
the Saints. However the Saints were tiring and their frustration at
slowly loosing ground started to show with Harrison sin binned for an
off the ball incident. On 70 minutes a kick from man of the match Peter
Le Marquand deep into the corner by the South Norfolk's try line was
fielded by the Saints winger but Adam Cook ripped the ball in the tackle
and instigated a cross field passage of play that resulted in the Saints
conceding a penalty in front of the posts, which LeMarquand kicked for
an easy two points. From the restart the Rhinos recovered possession
and Peter LeMarquand set off on a spectacular long curved run before
off loading to Woodland to score under the posts, giving LeMarquand
an easy conversion. Then on the stroke of full time Woodland was on
the end of a fluent cross field move to complete a late brace of tries
to make the final score 46 -22 in favour of Ipswich Rhinos.
