RHINOS
COMPLETE LOCAL DERBY DOUBLE
Ipswich Rhinos 38 - 26 South Norfolk Saints
In
a fiercely contested local derby Ipswich built up a comfortable half
time lead but a gritty South Norfolk side fought back to give the Rhinos
an uncomfortable second half and push them to the final whistle. Without
ever dominating the Saints the Rhinos controlled the first half building
a 24-0 lead before the Saints replied. On 5 minutes Peter LeMarquand
took a quick penalty to Mike Fields who made good distance before popping
it off to Nick Woodland in support on the wing to open the scoring.
On 18 minutes the Rhinos rounded off a good spell of pressure when a
fast cross-field passage of play found men over on the wing, Dave West
finishing in the corner.

Shortly
after Mike Fields again broke through the Saints line only to be stopped
on the line, but the ball was quickly recycled to Tane Trafford to score
from close range. South Norfolk then enjoyed their best spell of the
first half and where held up on the Rhinos line several times before
a scoot from Rhino Dave West from within his own half saw him run a
full 60 metres to score by the posts. All four tries where converted
by Peter LeMarquand to make the score 24-0. However, on the stroke of
half time the Saints retained some hope when the Rhinos knocked-on in
front of the posts and from the resulting set Chris Kent pushed over
for the try, which Lumley converted to make it 24-6 to the Rhinos at
half time.

South
Norfolk attacked from the start of the second half, Forrest adding an
unconverted try within 3 minutes. However the Rhinos responded with
a try of their own when Rhinos man of the match Lee Alliston recovered
possession from a Saints knock on to set up Nick Woodland for his second
try. Peter LeMarquand converting to make the score 30 - 10. The Saints
controlled the next 20 minutes putting Ipswich under pressure and adding
further tries from Groom and Hayles to peg the score back to 30 points
to 20. LeMarquand kicked a penalty on 68 minutes to settle the Rhino
nerves, and finally any Saints hopes of a story book come back died
with a try from Mike Fields when he caught a loose ball from a deliberate
knock on, and ran in the try whilst the Saints waited in anticipation
for the whistle. Jez Davies added a late try for the Saints which was
converted by Lumley to make the final score 38 -26 to the Rhinos.

Next
week Ipswich have undoubtedly their toughest game of the season when
they entertain the London Skolars in a game that could well decide the
Eastern Division championship as both sides are still undefeated this
season. Kick off is 2-30pm at Ipswich Rugby club.
