Ipswich vs Cambridge
24th June 2000
RHINOS
BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Ipswich
44 - 20 Cambridge
After three successive away matches ending in defeat at the hands of
West London, St Albans and Hemel, Ipswich Rhinos returned home to record
a desevered win over Cambridge Eagles at Rushmere Road on Saturday.
In front of an appreciative band of spectators Ipswich ran in a total
of nine tries to move a place above Cambridge in the Eastern Conference
table.
There
were some interested onlookers among the spectators at Rushmere Road,
among them James Ogilvie-Bull a player who excelled for the Ipswich
Rhinos as a 16year old before joining the London Broncos academy team.
Ogilvie-Bull is now a full time Professional with Allied Dunbar Premiership
Bristol under the watchful eyes of Bob Dywer and Ellery Hanley.
On
the field the Le Marquand brothers were paired together in the centre
for the first time while former player Mike Little made a comeback to
the side after a long absense.
In
defeat this season Ipswich have conceeded early points before going
on toshow plenty of good approach play without being able to dominate
for long periods. Rhinos took the game straight to their opponents on
this occasion scoring early themselves in both halves. Prop Adam Welch
made ground down the middle before switching out wide and releasing
Paul Thurston to score in the corner. Another player coming to the fore
through match fitness and training is team Captain Richard Pollard and
he showed his sharpness to deliver a delayed pass to allow full back
Tony Skurr to sprint clear of his markers from a long way out for his
first club try on his home debut.
Play
settled down with good defence from both sides dominating proceedings
for the next eighteen minutes. Ipswich were awarded a penalty and good
approach work by the forwards took play through the tackle count resulting
in winger Daren Page going over the try line. Ipswich scored again when
hooker Steve Barrett`s break freed Andy Windridge and his neat overhead
pass put Welch free for a spectacular score. Industrious stand off Pollard
scored a try of his own before Cambridge launched a fightback with tries
from key cambridge man scrum half Vinnie Turner and dangerous winger
Darren Williams. Ipswich completed a high quality first half in the
lead 30-10 courtesey of a typically elusive close range James Goodall
try.
Ipswich
again made a good start and further increased their lead over Cambridge
inside five minutes of the restart when outstanding young prospect Skurr
underlined his potential taking advantage of good Ipswich possession
to score his second try of the game. To their credit Cambridge enjoyed
a purple patch and fought back with a score from Paul Ansell and a second
try from the competitive Williams.
Ipswich
took control with the scores at 34-20 and squeezed Cambridge out of
the game as Pollard combined with forwards Tom Evans Jones and Glyn
Thomas to set up a try for veteran Dave Muff. The speedy Page ended
the match in style receiving a neat pass from Andy Wilson deep in his
own half again via Pollard to outstrip the flagging Eagles defence for
a 50 metre try.
Ipswich now have an outstanding chance of realising their target of
winning all remaining home games with Bedford the visitors to Rushmere
Road on Saturday, Bedford gave a much improved performance at the weekend
running South Norfolk to a close match before losing 20-38.
The Derby match away to South Norfolk Saints is at Thetford on Saturday
8th July.
