Afro-Celt Sound System "Sound Magic". Bodhran and kora? Talking drums and uilleann pipes? Echoing ancient trade roots from a thousand years ago, Sound Magic reunites two seemingly disparate music traditions in a contemporary setting, reaching for a dance-oriented but spiritual hybrid that takes on a life of its own. Altan "Once Again". I wasn't familiar with Altan when I bought this CD but was acting on a recommendation about the band in general. This is a good collection and some of the tracks are excellent. I was surprised to find that this was a double CD, as this wasn't highlighted by Amazon's description. Mary Black "The Best Of 1998-2001". This is an unusual 'best of'. In fact it is two different ways to understand the title. Disc 1 is a traditional 'best of' containing some of the best songs from Mary's albums since 'The Holy Ground' up until 'Speaking With the Angel'. It also contains two previously unreleased songs, Bothy Band "BBC Live in Concert". this is an album that typifies everthying great about irish music - there are great tunes, legendary musicians, seemless changes of mood - it's an album that can make you get up and dance like an lunatic (or maybe that's just me?!) - everyone should have a copy. Paul Brady "Nobody Knows". Paul Brady can be forgiven the dry complaint of this anthology's title: his long arc through Irish folk and rock has made fans of Mark Knopfler, Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, and Bob Dylan, while Brady's songs and fleet guitar have popped up on an impressive array of albums. Cherish the Ladies "The Girls wont Leave the Boys Alone" - Simply excellent !! Cherish the Ladies are primarily known for their instrumental skills--nearly every member is a contest-winning musician--so it might come as a bit of a surprise that on The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone, 10 of the 13 tracks are songs. The Chieftains "The Wide World Over". One of the elements that's made the Chieftains the stellar Celtic band in the world is their love of innovative collaborations with mainstream pop stars. The Wide World Over: A 40-Year Celebration gathers into a single collection some of the Irish ensemble's most memorable moments. The Chieftains "Best of..." No collection of Irish music would be complete without the Chieftains, who perform traditional songs without any annoying pop-music inflections or sappiness. A collection of their work for Columbia Records, The Best of the Chieftains is an excellent place to begin delving into their sizable catalog.
