Chronicle of the Islay Golf Club and the Machrie Links Following the Club's centenary in 1991, Mr John Cubbage, B.Sc. M.I.C.E. was commissioned to compile a record of the Club's history. John, a golf historian and collector, had successfully written the history of Cawdor Golf Club in Glasgow. His in -depth research has produced not only an account of the Club's 100 years but also a way of life on Islay which has remained little changed by the passing of time - although the boy caddies now wear shoes. Containing many photographs of yesteryear and plans of the course throughout its development this hard bound book contains informative and amusing facts. What par would be given to a 750 yard or 620 yard hole nowadays? The book records the commissioning by our founder fathers of one of the country's leading professional players as well as designer, Willie Campbell. The Mussleburgh lad at that time was resident professional at Old Ranfurly Golf Club in Bridge of Weir. His subsequent match against Willie Fernie to inaugurate the club is recorded in detail. The prize for this match was £100 and a gold medal. (The gold medal is still retained by Willie's grandson) A copy of this unique publication can be obtained for only £10.00 plus p&p simply fill in THIS FORM |
