The Izzard Family
Izzard
A variant of the surname Izard.
- An English and French surname from a Germanic female personal name composed of is (meaning ice) and hild (meaning strife or battle).
- A French surname from the German personal name Ishard, composed of is ice and hard, meaning hardy, brave or strong.
To date I have been able to trace my paternal grandfather George Ephraim Joseph Izzard's line back to his great grandfather (my great great great grandfather), James Izzard.
In following the line it becomes obvious the family generally upheld the tradition of naming the eldest son after his father. In fact, when researching this line it became obvious that many names, both female as well as male, were "handed down" from generation to generation. This proved useful when searching the various records available.
Like many in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Izzards had large families by today's standards. My paternal grandparents George and Amelia Izzard, following in the footsteps of their ancestors, had eleven surviving children; sadly two of them died in infancy.
