What is a News Feed?

A news feed consists of a list of new or amended content published to a web site. The feed allows you to receive regular updates to your PC about changes made to the web site without actually having to visit the site.

Most news feeds are now denoted by a standard icon, Standard icon for identifying a news feed, called the feed icon although there are still some sites that use non-standard icons.

Before you can read a news feed you need to have a news reader. A news reader is a small application that allows you to read and subscribe to news feeds.

You can either use a browser-based news reader (the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera all include their own feed readers) or alternatively install dedicated software (there is a wide variety available, both free and commercial).

How to use a News Feed

Once you have a news reader you can subscribe to a feed. To subscribe to this site's news feed:

  1. Click on the feed icon (I have placed a feed icon on both the home page and under What's New) to display the feed.
  2. Click on link entitled Subscribe to this feed to receive regular updates (see Figure 1 below).

  3. Once subscribed to the news feed you can keep up-to-date with any changes happening to izzardhistory.co.uk without having to visit the site every time. If you see an item of interest in the news feed, click on the title to view the original article.
