The Gardner Family

Gardner

A variant of the surname Gardener. An occupational name derived from the Anglo-Norman French gardinier, mean gardener.

In medieval times a gardener was probably someone who cultivated edible produce in an orchard or kitchen garden.

I have traced the Gardners back four generations to my three times great grandparents, Henry and Ann Gardner, who were both born in the last decade of the 18th century.

Both Henry and Ann originated from Essex, but moved towards London in Middlesex during the mid-19th century, with subsequent generations based in the east end of London.
