The word Altarus was pencilled by the composer on the title page of his Third Symphony and later erased.

Though it looks like a Latin word, it isn't. A tentative solution to this minor mystery is offered. The greater riddle of Brian's thwarted career

is actually much easier to solve: there are many clues in the published literature.
