Renovation of 1932 Talbot 14/45

ENGINE

pure vintage engineering

line-boring the mains (Malcolm Barker of Barker Engineering)

fitting the big ends

final assembly with new pistons

clutch assembly (note blades to circulate air)

aligning manual four-speed gearbox (note thrust bearing for torque-tube)

It is worth noting that one of Talbot designers less efficacious ideas was to top up the gearbox oil from the engine oil splash.    this was achieved by means of a large-bore copper tube running from a collection point in the crankcase to the gearbox.    Whilst it did mean that the gearbox would never run dry, the drawback of allowing dirty oil from the engine (polluted with combustion derivatives such as water) easily outweighed the benefit.   This pipe has been blocked, and the gearbox oil needs to be checked and topped up occasionally.
