Renovation of 1932 Talbot 14/45

CHASSIS AND RUNNING GEAR

The chassis was in near-perfect condition needing shotblast, zinc-spray and stove-enamel to bring up to this condition:-

Other views of the chassis may be seen here

The 'waisted' design is an attribute of the torque-tube drive system whereby the forward drive from the engine to the rear wheels is via a rigid tube housing the prop-shaft which reacts against the gearbox/engine unit and 'pushes' the car forward through the front engine mounting bolts situated in the narrow part of the chassis.     Effectively, when accelerating forward, the engine is jammed into the narrow section, so even in the unlikely event the engine mounting bolts fall out, the system is still stable (not so sure about going in reverse, however!)
