The Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London had become the governors. Those who admired the old buildings used to think that with such guardians they were safe. But no; the house agent element in the present Corporation rendered it no more trustworthy than a committee of the Endowed Schools Commission

THE ART JOURNAL

This Magazine is the oldest Art Magazine in the world. It celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its first appearance in 1887, and during the whole of its career it has held the foremost position amongst periodicals of a like character.

It covers in each year the whole range of the Arts which find expression through the pen and pencil, the brush, graver and chisel.

It surveys the artist's life, whether it be passed in the production of pictures, decoration, or the Art Industries.

It records the advance of Art education of this country, compares it with those of others, and endeavours to assist it by illustrating the best of its products.

In the field of landscape painting it draws its supply from every quarter of the globe.

It was the first journal to draw attention to photography, and it has ever since continued to utilise the wonderful advances which have been made by this helpmate of the Arts. Line-Engraving, Lithography, Chromo-Lithography, Etching, Wood-Cutting and all the recently introduced reproductive processes are illustrated in its pages.
